Bears Offseason: The Big Picture
Re-signings
DT Henry Melton [Franchise Tag]
RB Armando Allen [RFA Tender]
DT Nate Collins [1 year Minimum]
CB Zack Bowman [1 year Minimum]
Releases/Loses [5.225]
TE Kellen Davis [2.5 million]
TE Matt Spaeth [1.6 million]
DT Matt Toenia [1.125 million]
LB Geno Hayes [Jacksonville]
LB Nick Roach [Oakland]
Restructure/Extension
Free Agents
OT Jermon Bushrod [New Orleans] 5 years 35.9 million/17.5 guaranteed
A solid upgrade at LT that allows the Bears to shift Webb to RT and gives them a consistent performer at LT. He also allows the Bears to permanently move Carimi to OG and gives them depth at OT for the first time in a long time. Bushrod is not Ryan Clady, but he fixes a massive problem for the Bears.

TE Martellus Bennett [NY Giants] 4 years 20 million
The Bears get a 6'6" 265lbs. athlete that has every tool an elite TE needs to be dominant and he was very good when finally getting out of Dallas and being allowed to be a #1 TE. Bennett is also a strong blocker and gives the Bears a complete TE for the first time in a long time.

Found this article on the trib, I'll only post the part that matters....regarding Spaeth and Davis and how their cap works, and probably favors them being cut.

The Bears now have to decide what to do with the other tight ends on the roster. Davis had a $2.4 million base salary with a $100,000 workout bonus. He would count $3.85 million against the cap if on the team and $1.35 million against the cap if released.
Matt Spaeth, who had arthroscopic knee surgery this offseason, has a base salary of $1.025 million with a $500,000 roster bonus and $100,000 workout bonus. He would count $1,958,334 against the cap if on the team and $333,334 against the cap if released.

Lets not forget we still have to resign some guys of our own, including Louis G, BU, MLB, and hopefully Izzy or Roach. I'm thinking the team turns inwards now to try and get some resignings done.

Thanks, Ric. I forgot Spaeth took a pay cut last year but still the two of them combined would net us $4 million in cap savings if released. Now that we finally have a true all-around 3down TE who can both block and receive, do we need a "specialist" like Spaeth?
Bennett - ERod - Eldridge/udfa/Adams ... That's all you need
Lets use that 4 mill for our own FAs.

I like this Windy, keep it updated

Looks like we are going to be losing a lot of our own guys and Phil Emery will put his stamp on this team,
Geno Hayes to Jacksonville.

Windy, how does the team handle being down 2-3 LB's, and the loss of Louis? Also we really don't have another TE outside of MB, is still a draft need? Actually we don't have a ton of depth on the DL right now either do we? Seems like we have as many holes as we did before, just in different areas.

The signings are not done.
Just because we are not bringing back our guys does not mean that we are not going to sign players to fill holes.
My guess
LB: We will sign 2 LBs and we will draft one high in the draft to compete at MLB. [3 new guys]
OG: I think we will resign Louis and draft and OG [2]
TE: We have 3 TEs right now I like, Bennett, Rodriguez, Adams.
