Matt Toeaina Set To Be Released
By Vaughn McClure, Tribune reporter11:37 a.m. CDT, March 13, 2013
The Chicago Bears' signing Tuesday of tight end Martellus Bennett to a four-year, $20 million contract made Kellen Davis immediately expendable, and the former fifth-round draft pick from Michigan State was released Wednesday.
The Bears also are expected to release veteran defensive tackle Matt Toeaina, according to a league source. Toeaina spent the last six seasons with the team but lost his starting job to Stephen Paea.
The Bears apparently approached Toeaina about taking a paycut with one year left on his deal. He is due a base salary of $760,000 with a $290,000 roster bonus and $75,000 workout bonus. Releasing Toeaina would save the Bears $1.125 million in cap space as Toeaina would count $500,000 against the cap.
Davis, whose release was confirmed Wednesday by the team, never lived up to expectations despite being a big, athletic target. Last season, Davis caught 19 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns but had his share of drops. In five seasons with the Bears, he had 47 catches for 529 yards with 11 touchdowns. He started 35 of the 80 games he played in as a Bear.
Davis had a $2.4 million base salary with a $100,000 workout bonus. He would have counted $3.85 million against the cap if on the team and now counts $1.35 million against the cap after being released.
The Bears still have to decide what to do with their other veteran tight end, Matt Spaeth. He has a base salary of $1.025 million with a $500,000 roster bonus and $100,000 workout bonus. Spaeth would count $1,958,334 against the cap if on the team and $333,334 against the cap if released.

Sucks that he spent most of his best years on the bench, but he still gave us some great plays here and there.

Yep. I hope some other team picks him up. Anyone know if Collins is gone?

It's not exactly hard to break into the Bears DT rotation, especially not last year. He just wasn't terribly effective over the past couple seasons. Replaceable rotation DT. Hopefully, the team feels like I do about the position and want it to get filled with affordable, young depth.

False. He was excellent against the run, i remember he had some great games against Adrian Peterson. Unfortunately, a DT needs to be effective against the run AND the pass, which big Toe wasnt. He was a decent enough DT, gave us some depth, but alas...cant keep everyone.
I'm trying//to let go//of maybe//but maybe's just so//very interesting//Oh, what a thing.

I never said he didn't have some nice traits, just that he wasn't terribly effective. His lone strength was setting against the run, it's a nice trait and he was pretty good at it, but those guys are a dime-a-dozen and something you want to fill with cheaper players.

he refused to restructure... he could have stayed if he wanted to
