Trade Back?

Trade downs are fine when you know "your guy" isn't gonna be there and the next best doesn't justify the pick. But when you have a chance to take a blue chip rookie at a spot where you need him you don't trade down just fill out depth and STeams. You're first two picks should be able to start for you or in some way or another have an impact in their first year. Third picks and down are your depth and developmental players.

Jerry Angelo was always trading down for second rate players when he shouldn't have and never trading up for that "right guy" when he should have. I'd rather not see us repeat that pattern under Emery. He's full of surprises I'll admit that but he's also somewhat cautious and calculating and he does his homework as well or better than anyone. I just don't see him pulling off anything as complex as trading two top 50 (52 to be precise) picks for picks that late in those rounds and a couple of thirds. He wants to draft impact players and that's not where you find them. JMHO

i totally agree with u, i just dont see the point, yes i know we have a lot of holes, yes, yes... and i know we could get MAYBE more useful players, but the problem is you just dont know, and i think that we should not trade down unless we exactly know why, not only for the number

Marshall is great and a Top 3 WR in the NFL. Bennett had a career year last year and he could end up as one year wonder and be like he was in DAL stats wise. I know they had Witten getting thrown to and different team bla bla. He could still end up with those numbers and isn't a sure thing. I do think he is but there are many doubters.

reading up to this years draft and hearing what experts have to say, this draft is deep and the difference between #18-#40 isn't that much this year in what they expect the players to do in the NFL. I don't know this, I'm no Scout and expert.

I don't think there is a "OUR GUY WE REALLY WANT" in the 1st round when we pick. There are lots of possible scenarios that make sense and fill needs. We lost 2 starting LBs and haven't replaced them. You can be sure that Emery will pick a ILB with #20 or #50. At #50 I don't see the guy Emery values best still on the board. Trade down from #20 to #31 would still give us 1 of Brown, Minter, Ogletree or for those like me who like him Te'o. We would still get 1 of our guys while adding much needed pick(s).

That's why Emery will want to trade down. Getting what he wants + another player with an early 3rd or even late 2nd helps us more than make a reach for a guy we want.

If we pick up OG Moore, we buy some time to get what we want and need.


Trade down to get 1st + 3rd and we could go ILB, OL and CB in the draft to fill the needs and get cheap players that will contribute to the team without relying too much on them.
With the 4th and 5th we can go WR, DE or OL again.



Bushrod - Moore - Pick - Brown/Carimi/Garza - Webb

that line is ten times better than last years WHILE we get younger on the defensiv side and without paying Roach or Urlacher money we don't have to spend.



I usually don't like trading down, but this year it makes too much sense with the lack of our picks and the needs on the roster with the depth of the draft.

It's a tough call IMO, alot will depend on who is there. Are we assuming that cooper and Warmack are gone?

If that's the case we are weighing what we value more

Warford/Jones/T'eo/Minter ect. And a extra late 3rd

Or

Fluker/olgetree/someone who slips unexpectly

I think alot will fall on how our front office grades out fluker and olgetree

Thats a great analysis and its hard to disagree. Makes a heckuva lot of sense. The key to this whole FA/pre-draft process is in your scenario. We really really must sign a FA OG. Moore & Schwartz being the two most viable candidates depending on cost. I know Phil is saying otherwise but I see that as simply lowering expectations and keeping prices low. I don't believe it one bit. Stein could easily free up the cap space to do that + re-sign Lach/Louis/Izzy without doing anything spectacular or crazy. The process has been detailed here several times so I won't repeat it.

The "trade down" gambit becomes a lot more realistic to me if we don't go into the draft desperately needing a stud OG at 20.

I think this is the draft to trade down. For one reason, we are picking at #20 which isn't the best pick to get the "elite" players, secondly you have teams like the 49ers who have a ton of picks to deal, and third it is a "deep" draft one where we could fill many holes on this team. For me, if Ogletree and Cooper are gone at 20 then I say we trade back and pick up a couple another second and third. I don't know the points system, and I'm not going to take the time to come up with my own mock trade situation. That's for others to do and me to read, lol. We are tight on cap space, it is one of the more deep drafts at some of the positions we have the most need. While I hate waiting through the draft only to see my team trade out of the first round, I think this is the year to do it.

Don't fret Jackie, I'm betting Emery might have a FA LB up his sleeve. Either that or a trade down to get multiple LB's.
