Martellus Bennett Contract
Dollars and sense: Bears TE Bennett's contract
By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter 8:43 p.m. CDT, March 13, 2013
The four-year contract for Chicago Bears tight end Martellus Bennett has a total value of $20.4 million and $9.215 million is fully guaranteed after the third day of the league year in 2014.
Here is the complete breakdown of Bennett’s contract:
2013 $4.5 million signing bonus, $715,000 base salary, $100,000 workout bonus
Total: $5.315 million
Cap figure: $1.94 million
2014 $4.8 million base salary, $100,000 workout bonus
Total: $4.9 million
Cap figure: $6.025 million
2015 $4.9 million base salary, $100,000
Total: $5 million
Cap figure: $6.125 million
2016 $5.085 million base salary, $100,000 workout bonus
Total: $5.185 millionCap figure: $6.31 million
Note: The 2013 base salary is fully guaranteed and $4 million of the $4.8 million base salary in 2014 is guaranteed vs. injury only. However, the $4 million becomes fully guaranteed after Day 3 of the 2014 league year. So, $9.215 million is fully guaranteed provided Bennett doesn’t give the team a reason to release him.

one thing I see out of that contract structure is to me it looks like they want to be bears. Why? Well they made it really cap friendly to be a Bear in the first year of their contracts. Many players dont like that cause when their cap figure gets higher down the road they become cut targets. At least thats how im iterpretting the numbers if Im wrong let me know

There's some truth to that mo but he's also guaranteed $9.215 mil by this time next year if he's still on the roster so his deal gives him an average of $4.6 mil per year guaranteed over the first two years. That's competitive with some of the other better TEs and $2.1 mil per year more than he got last year from NY.
I do believe he was in favor of coming to Chicago as well although he didn't have it all the bad in NY either. I think it's just that after they signed Beatty they weren't in much better cap shape than we are and simply couldn't go that high. It's a guess but it fits. He's still with a contender with a very good QB and the opportunity to do as well or better as a player.

that's almost always how it works...first year base salary is very low because the team is paying out the signing bonus all at once, then it's prorated over the life of the contract for cap purposes...so the player is getting the big money up front, and the team is getting the benefit of smaller cap hit in year 1 and 2...
the only thing that really matters to players is guaranteed money...

Maybe David Terrell was his all time hero???
Bushrod has Ruben Brown's old number and I consider that good luck. Ruben was a very good FA pickup. Anyone notice that our three top OTs have numbers #72, #73, and #74. Anyone into numerology that can tell us whether that's good or bad?

Don't know why, but apparently he's been wanting to change it for awhile...
