Well, that article was a bit harsh in tone, but its still a valid point. If people looked at this situation OBJECTIVELY, there really is no reason for the Bears to keep Urlacher, other then the fact that we dont have a replacement in the wings as of right now.

1.He's old, close to retirement, only has another season...maybe 2.
2.He's been affected by injuries. There's no guarantee that he won't finish this season without injuries either
3.He wants too much money. With all the moves Emery made and needs to make, we simply can not afford Lach.

If people put aside emotion, they would realize that unless Lach is willing to take a HUGE cut from his asking price, there really is no way we should re-sign him this year, its time to move on and get our new MLB. Its sad, since he is the face of the franchise, but that wasnt going to last forever. Im sure wherever he goes, he will return and sign a one day contract with the Bears so he can officially retire a Bear. Im just sad that we couldnt get him that SB ring he deserved. Then again, who knows? Maybe he takes that cut, gives us one good season and we do get him that ring this year and then he retires. Ya never know.
    I'm trying//to let go//of maybe//but maybe's just so//very interesting//Oh, what a thing.

Indeed, I really wish that him and Briggs are going to get a SB ring with the Bears because they deserve it big time.
The only reason that we should resign him is because he is the "natural" leader of the Bears defense, he knows the current players and could possibly make the transtion easier from Rod to Tucker. But I totally agree with you Jimmors he isn't the player he was, the really big plays aren't comming from him anymore.
    Oderint dum metuant.

McNeil is a small potatoes broadcaster/sportswriter at the very bottom of the food chain and mats is right. If the only way he'll get listened to and get his ratings up is to take an unpopular stance then he's gonna do it just like ol' "Im Steve Rosenbloom so Deal with It". It may keep a paycheck coming in but it's not an admirable or ethical way to earn a living in my book.

Just to show you how meaningless McNeil is try to find a Wikipedia page on him, LOL. Google it and you get one on a retired 4 star general and you get one on McNeil's former co-host Matt Spiegel but not one on McNeil himself. Jeezus almost every player whose ever played in the NFL has a Wiki page but not McNeil. IMHO a snail is higher on the evolutionary ladder then he is and they also have a Wiki page, LOL.

It's a rant and it means nothing. Even the Vikes interest in Urlacher or his in them is nothing more than filler. I have my doubts that it's anything more than a simple phone call to collect info. Every team in the league knows that Urlacher wants to remain in Chicago and if the Vikes did it for any reason at all it was less out of interest than just as a payback for the Bears rumored interest in Loadholt which I don't think was all that serious anyway. We needed a LT not a house sized RT. We already have a guy like that playing LT.

It's not written down anywhere and it will never be discussed even in hushed tones but there is an unwritten rule about not messing things up for the home team when they're dealing with a situation like this. If you go out and drive up the price when it's your turn, and that time will surely come, then it's "what goes around comes around time". Iconic players like Urlacher I kind of hands off guys to most every other GM with the possible exception of the Jerry Jones of the world.

McNeil is not a knowledgeable football writer which is why he's not a beat writer for the Bears. I doubt anyone in the locker room would give him the time of day so with no facts or quotes to write from his style is strictly "MSU". Make Shit Up. He's a waste of time to even read but just by the length of this thread and the comments you can easily see how he attracts attention with it.

Like MP said, "move on nothing to see here folks".

So not to pick a fight or anything, but McNiel and Speigel are still doing the mid morning show on 670. He's been in radio and sports writing for 25+ years, hardly anything to sniff at. He's not new to chicago radio or writing by any means on chicago sports. And if he was as bad as some of you were acting he'd be out of the town a long time ago.

I'm not a personal fan of his, he's contrain to the point of absurdity. quite often I turn the dial at 9pm and don't turn it back until 6 when Holmes' show comes on. But I do listen occassionally and when he's not going over the top, I tend to agree w/him, and even when he is I tend to agree w/his point. I also understand that in Chicago the anti chicago hero schtick helps ratings; it's the only reason people listen and call into Bores and Bernstein. It's a legit way to generate ratings, and it's hardly Jerry Springeresque.

He never played pro football btw, but I think most of the people on this board would love to get to do what he does for even a brief time, let alone 25years...get paid well to talk and write about chicago sports.

is he a dick, ya that's his bit, but that doesn't mean what he says cannot be, or isn't correct. A dick can still have a valid opinion.

OK so he's a dick with an opinion. How valid is what we're posting about here and the consensus seems to say it's not very valid at all. IMHO his level of football knowledge is less than that of the average poster on this board so that makes his opinions uninformed at best.

He can have all of them that he wants and I can disagree with them which is what I did.
