Helmet contact rule passed today - Yikes
Pretty soon players will be looking for another league to play for. Ridiculous.

Well, that was fast.
Faced with concerns from coaches but possible litigation worries arising from current and future players, owners voted on Wednesday to outlaw the use of the crown of the helmet by offensive or defensive players in the open field.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the rule passed by a “wide margin.” (It’ll be interesting to know who opposed it, and whether there was a closer initial vote followed by a more comfortable second tally.)
And so the ultimate reality show will have another layer of reality this year, with players and coaches and media and fans complaining about the latest effort to make safer an inherently unsafe endeavor."

How on earth are they ever going to enforce this rule. Officials are already confused by the lack of clarity in the rule book and this will just add to the confusion.

just unbelievable. I expect a lot of backlash with this rule. Safety, safety, who gives a crap. Everyone knows what they sign up for.

Bears, not according to the retired players lawsuit...and it's the crown of the helmet, the very top, it's not like they cannot hit helmet to helmet. It's a good rule change.

This will affect the way AP runs. This is his move when he reaches on the second level on an inside run play. I think if you're going to have the helmet-to-helmet calls against the D, then this is only fair to protect the defenders.

No it is not a good rule. How are officials going to be able to see that without going to instant replay?

Goodell is reportedly asking that they adopt this new helmet for maximum safety.

And for teams on a tight budget, they have this DIY version that Goodell would approve of also:

Exactly. A RB or Pass Receiver lowers his shoulder and he and the tackler have helmet to helmet contact. Which one get's penalized? How accurately can they determine what constitutes the crown versus on off center hit? Just one more play for the booth to review. There are other ways to approach this but those would affect their bottom line so they're not interested. This is truly getting ridiculous.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I thought it was only for open field ball carriers. anything inside the box was OK. I'm not expert but i would have to assume lower head behind line and up to linebackers would be ok.
