Thoughts? Thumbs up or thumbs down? Does this mean bye-bye to Izzy? I liked him...

Not sure if he is for depth or to replace Izzy. I consider him a downgrade from Izzy so hope that Izzy is not on his way out.

He is not particularly explosive off the edge but will feel pressure and leverage his way to the ball. He knows how to use his hands to shed blocks but lacks a burst as he tries to close on the play. He shows good effort and intensity. He still needs to work on reading and reacting to blocking schemes.
He is graded pretty low too.

I do not think this rules out Izzy, especially if McBride is making the vet minimum, but it is not a good side.

McBride is not as a good as Izzy, but he is probably a lot cheaper. It would be stupid for Izzy to play for the vet minimum and that may be all we have to offer with young guys like McClellin and Wootton taking most of the reps across from Peppers.

I just think it is an extra body to bring to camp. I don't believe he will make the team, we'll see.

It is indeed a step down from Izzy, but we needed to make sure we had that versatile LE/UT in the fold and this protects us against his loss. Izzy deserves more than we can probably pay him without restructures and extensions, and though I do really want him back, I wish him the best and hope he gets big money if he leaves.

I think this is one of the areas on defense were we see the nip and tuck so we can invest in the offense.

I hate to lose Izzy, great player and a great person, but he does deserve more than the Bears can pay him and we will welcome him back when he wants to retire.

I don't know if it's his death knell but it doesn't sound good so far. Seems to me this is another Chauncey Davis type signing and we all know how that worked out in comparison to the year Izzy had last year.

Based on that alone he probably deserves a raise but at the very least it shouldn't be a cut. Not after they challenged him to elevate his game and he did it. I'm sure Phil would like him for that vet minimum of $940k and the ability to only need to use $550k of cap space to cover it but it's not realistic to expect that of him.

Age shouldn't even be all that much of a factor either since in a sense he's another freakish player as far as his physical skills and conditioning. A few years ago the guy was covering kicks. He's been a total team player and beyond that he's still ultra productive in the rotation and we can use him.

I'm getting to the point where I think it's time for Phil and Cliff Stein to rework a deal or two, get back off the edge a bit, and get the rest of the roster filled out with the guys they need as starters or front line backups. They can only play poor and turn their pockets out so long before guys are gonna call their bluff and look elsewhere.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
