Anyone know much about Edwin Williams?
I realize we haven't seen much of him. On the one hand, you'd think that if he was any good at all, he would have been getting more playing time over the years.
I did some digging, because I was just curious about the guy. He was a true center in college, and ranked as the #7 center the year he went undrafted.
LINK to a 2009 scouting report
LINK to his bio when he was a Redskin
He stated two games this year in December at guard (Seattle and Minnesota losses). Anyone remember how he did? I might try to find those games tonight and what him. I wish I knew if he was a possible replacement for Garza, or just a career backup.

Maybe a notch above OMG as far as actually being able to block somebody. I think he's more of a true OC than and OG and more finesse than power but he's supposed to play with some attitude. They extended him a year ago so at least then they saw something they liked but it's a new day with new coaches so it's anybody's guess what he's worth to them. He's certainly replaceable if we can draft better.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

he started 7 games in 2011 and, if memory serves, was the only bears lineman to receive a positive grade from PFF that year...he didn't look as good last year, in my opinion...based on what i've seen i think he's probably an ideal back-up at all three interior line positions...

Its hard to say how good players like him can be when he has had to play for Tice and Lovie.

I'd say he's more of a serviceable backup OC than OG. As for him replacing Garza for a season, I don't know about all that. Let's just get us a good OC from the draft and forget about the band-aids.

JABF, I agree with soul as he puts it here. Although, I might suggest that soul was being a little, well, diplomatic from my perspective. None the less, a reasonable back-up.

I keep hoping there's something I missed regarding the players on our roster, and there could be a solid player to replace Garza. All roads keep coming back to the same place. We need to draft a center capable of starting day-1. Garza is done. And E.Will is a backup at best.
If we end up going another season with Garza, then that tells me the Bears are writing off this season as a building year - and 2014 is the year they have all their ducks in a row to compete for a championship. Maybe we get better enough to claw our way past the Vikings and can be 2nd place in the NFCN this year. Then in '14 edge the Packers.
I keep seeing in my mind, those endless loops of dline guys busting through Garza to vaporize the pocket. Cutler running for his life and chucking bad passes, or desperate Hail Mary's to Marshall in triple coverage. And still being unable to pick up 3rd and short by running. Settling for field goals instead of punching in the TD's at the 1 foot line.
Stinks.
Any way I try to spin it - it still stinks.

Yup, I hear ya brudder. Don't think your the only one scouring the roster for someone you missed either. I've done that as well, and the only thing it shows me is how truly pathetic our O-Line really is. It's kind of like looking at a grizzly auto accident, you have to look but then you're sorry you did.

This is why I am so stuck on Barrett Jones. We need a leader who can be a beast in the run game and pass pro. To me, if we can get Louis back and get Barrett Jones via the draft, we will show dramatic improvement along the line.

Ive been tooting the Jones horn for a while too. Especially since I think it's unlikely that he will reach 50. He may not even get past the Packers or Ravens in the late 1st since they both just had two aging former-star Centers retire on them this year. And Another benefit if you happen to land Jones (and yes this is assuming he passes medical scrutiny which he will)...you can safely cut Garza and add $2.1m back to the cap.
