Well, that is basically what he said in this interview. Meaning he can't be counted on to play 3rd or 4th down.
Are they trying to piss him off so that he leaves or retires, thus taking the decision out of their hands to escape the fans anger for not bringing him back?

Maybe if he truly can only play 2 downs at a high level, at this point in his career, then he's still valuable to us. As an older player, we need to adjust accordingly and not burn him out. As a 2 down guy, with less wear-and-tear on his body by not playing third downs, then as the season goes on, he'd be better for us later in the season, especially if we get to the playoffs. And maybe he would be less apt to have injuries (especially those nagging injuries that don't end your season, but affect your level of play.....in particular with older players).

Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

urlacher was much better in coverage then in run support last year...i think it's just time to move on...there are some good linebacker prospects in this draft...with a new head coach it's a perfect time to move forward in a different direction...

I don't disagree with the sentiment that it's time to move on. That time comes for all these guys and it's not always easy, but I disagree that there are good prospects in this draft. This draft has a really weak crop of Backers.

Frankly he's always been a much better pass defender than run defender, hasn't he? So why would take him out in 3rd down passing situations? Not being a smartass, just doesn't make sense to me as a game day strategy. Another leverage/negotiating ploy to keep the price low?
Truth be told, I'm sick of this crap. And as much as I love Emery for the way-better-than-JA moves he's made, it's getting to be time to shit or get off the pot. We need to be moving on with OR without Urlacher by draft time at the very latest. That decision affects not only the draft board but FA moves we may need to make to shore up depth in the LB corps. Yeah, I want Emerystein to stop dicking around, make a freakin' decision, and execute the plan soon.
If HH doesn't really want him at a realistic (non-insulting) price he's willing to accept, then have the balls to tell him that, do the "thank you so much for your service" PR thing, and sign a FA LB (cuz we would need more than 1).
If HH does want him back as they've been insinuating, then cut the nickel-and-dime bullshit, stop whining about transparently false cap "poverty", and get a deal done at ~ $3m + incentives.
My strong preference is the latter but JUST DO SOMETHING soon. End rant...

maybe the reason for this statement now is that the fans are now seeing there is no market, and trestman is willing to explain why there is not a market. Url wants 2 years 6mil to be a 2 an old 2 down player...even though he is a valuable 2 down player.

Agreed, which to me says he's better on 3rd than 1st down. What the heck do I know?

Ever think that Emery NOT signing him is there making a stand? Perhaps they made him an offer, one he didn't like, and told him to go find a better deal. They are not going to sign him to what he wants if he can't get what he wants elsewhere.
They are offering him what they feel he is worth, and are not nickle-diming him at all. He is not worth the 5M a year he was asking for. Not anymore.

No one denies that. I agree. The FA market clearly does too. If he isn't coming back, his choice or HH's, then we need to get cracking on a FA LB because we aren't going to get both a MLB and a SLB in the draft alone.
