Yep, I don't we could go wrong taking the best or second best OG or OC in the draft as opposed to another huge question mark in a guy like Fluker. There's a huge need to get it right this time as far as drafting an Olineman and I'd much rather see us take a sure thing at an interior position than a reach at OT.

FA is for filling an immediate need and that's were we should be looking for LT help. With Kromer now in Chicago and the Saints struggling cap wise the Bushrod thing looks like a possibility. He may not be the top candidate but he should be a significant upgrade over Webb and allow us to move Webb back to RT to compete with Carimi. That would be a far better competition than that farce Tice played out last year between Webb and CWill.

This years draft is pretty rich in lineman and I believe Emery is smart enough to take advantage of that and score big with his first two picks. TE and MLB aside there isn't a bigger need right now than lineman and we should have a shot at a couple of very good ones at #20.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

We were hellbent on a pass rusher and took a huge reach chance on Shea that really burned us

Looking back it might have been wise to take DeCastro, but then again we didn't knew Wotton would step up and play like a boss this year. In a few seasons Shea have might developered to be Peppers replacemet(God make it happen)

I saw an opinion on that in another article that made sense. McClellin was a Lovie pick. He and Marinelli needed another pass rusher and Emery couldn't really deny that. At that time Izzy had just come of a down year and like Zif says no one knew what we had in Wootton then either. We got lucky in 2012 and both had banner years.

Grizz in hindsight DeCastro may have been a better pick at that spot but we didn't get burned on McClellin at all. The kid is a proven playmaker and before all is said and done we'll be happy we have him. He's a 100% pure football player who just needs a little more functional strength and NFL experience to reach his potential.

In one of his pressers Emery compared his rookie stats to those of Chandler and Irvin based on snaps played and he was right up there with them. If they don't decide to make a LB out of him he's the guy who'll most likely take Pep's place in another couple of years. He never did have the ideal size for LDE but he's plenty big enough for RDE.

Get him to a solid 265-270lbs this offseason without losing any of his speed or agility and he'll be a monster playmaker. He's far from a waste and there are several OGs and OCs in this years draft just as good as DeCastro was last year. I'd love to see a guy like Cooper still there when we pick.

The McClennin pick looked like Lovies last gasp at not so much as DE but MLB in the future if he still was around.

Now we have him and whats going to be the position he plays in the future?

This is a Trestman issue now. Does McClennin look like a modern day MLB to you to fill sombodys shoes ?

Look at his build ... its Urlacher all over again. This guy coming off of DE got what done ? Not much in sacks at DE.

Look at the other draft picks we could have taken that got alot more done as pure DE's.

McClennin also has the smarts to captain the defense. I think that was the move why we got him under Lovie.

McClellin is a good football player period. He's has the size and the speed to be another Urlacher but whether he has the instincts of a MLB and the ability to lead a defense remains to be seen. I think it's a possibility and regardless of what Lovie said I think it's always been a possibility in Emery's mind.

So he padded his hand by taking the most versatile of the DE prospects as opposed to the one who was more of a pure DE. He had 2.5 sacks and just missed twice that many but he also only played 35% of the defensive snaps. If he played 80% of them maybe he ends up with 7 the same as Wootton.

The kid was used more as a defensive weapon to create mismatches than he was a starting position player and so far even though he wasn't a DROY we still got our monies worth out of him if for no other reason than his drafting spurred Izzy and Wootton on to the best years either of them has ever had.

Funny how feeling somebody breathing down your neck for your job will do that huh?

    Soul,

Maybe the MLB position search is over with McClennin ... if this guy isnt the future MLB ... then thats Angelo and Lovies going away present.

We have OL deals to deal with, this draft and F.A. is going to define our BEARS.

This is no excuse for drafting or getting anybody in F.A. outside of OL players.

This season we better be looking at F.A. OL and DRAFT OL, in the later rounds we can address Defense.

But goddammit ... you know what the fuck we need.

Look at SFO and Kapernick ... the son of a bitch wouldnt be alive without that Offensive Line that Frisco built ...

    in less then 3 years.

This is the way the game is played ... if we have a fucked up OL ... we have a fucked up QB.

I dont give a good goddamn fuck how many Defense players we draft.

We already know what the results are going to be if the DEFENSE is always on the field because the OFFENSE ...

cant cover their own motherfuckin ass.

(It's McClellin jackie. The McClennin are different clen....er clan. )

We don't need five or six OLineman so saying that's all we should go after in FA and the draft if ludicrous. There are other needs even if you don't see them. We'll most likely pick up two and maybe three in combination of the draft and FA but Emery isn't gonna overlook the opportunity to sign or draft good football players at other positions.

We also needs a LB who should project as a MLB and we need a reliable TE too. Those two positions are also a given and if there's a LB still on the board in two who rates far better than any OLineman Emery will take him over a lineman just like he did with Jeffery last year.

And if there a late round QB who rates much higher that Trestman likes as a developmental guy that's another position we should look at drafting. After FA we'll have a much better idea of how he'll approach the draft but I think that about all we can be reasonable certain of right now is that his first pick is likely to be a lineman.
