lil rant from a commish
Okay so i've been running my cash league for about 5 years. And every year I break down how the scoring went and make sure that nothing was too over powered or under(other then K's) and try and make it as much of a even or small degrading line from qb, through k. So my scoring system is always changing. And I try and give the players options about what can be done to keep balance.
Last year I noticed that outside of 2-3 rb's and 1 wr and 1 te the top 20 scorers were QB's; so I broke everything down and decided they needed to be neutered a bit. (To help this the year before I added neg 1 pt for sacks, and still had this discrepency keep that in mind). So I offer up the choice of 50 yards for 1 pt in passing and 6points per td, or 25 yards per point and 4 points per td. Of the people that voted it was overwelming 50 per point.
One of those that voted this way just sent a scathing post about how unfair the qb scoring system is b/c matt ryan only got 3 points and threw for 340+ yards and no int's or fum's and wah wah wah. But he also got sacked 5 times and didn't throw a td. So I did the math, taking out D's(which is overpowered b/c of an overreaction I had to how many points were scored last year) I pointed out the top 10 scorers 4 were qb's, 5 were rb's and 1 was a wr; and the top 15 it went 5, 5, 5, qb/rb/wr, so in my opinion it's working.
I also point out that the in the other league we are in together the top ten were 7 qb's, 3 rb's, and top 15 were 9 qb's, 3 rb's and 3 wr's.
To make it worse, all this bitching was for nothing b/c it's not like he lost his game b/c of it. aaaaahhhh sorry just needed to vent.

As long as everyone is playing by the same rules, and they knew about those rules before they put together their draft rankings, then all is fair.
I'm not a big fan of tweaking scoring, especially that frequently, but that is because I want to inherently see a highlight or stat and know what that means to me & my team. I've been in the same fantasy league for 20 years, and I think we have only changed scoring 3 times. Each was incremental and not wholesale.
Oh, and FTR, penalizing QB's for sacks is pretty unusual. While we all know they can be caused by a QB holding the ball too long, penalizing a player for something that isn't individually driven is not something I'd be a fan of at all.

BS, thanks for the info. I Make tweeks, not wholesale changes, and all in the name of balancing the scoring, sometimes it works sometimes it fails. I figure if it's online you can see the scoring, and I also send an email w/the scoring system and highlight what has changed. And like I stated, I put up options on what to change; they can always say keep it the way it is.
The -1 sack does 2 things, 1st it's a way of brining in the OL into fantasy w/out having to draft IDP(which I would hate). It also helps negate the OVERWHELMING scoring that the top qb's bring to the table. Again in the other league we are in 6 of the top 10 scorers are qb's, and 9 of the top 15. In mine it's 4 qb's in the top 10 and 5 in the top 15.
I also did away w/bonus for x yards. from everyone; it just wasn't necessary.
The only other change I made was last year, which was to allow D/ST's, but severely neg impact teams for allowing more then 30-40 and 50 points, as much as -15. Which seems harse, but it only negates the St's points that bad D's get for giving up scores. There were times I would pick bad D's w/great st's just b/c I knew the the neg points for the 40 points they were bound to give up were more then made up by the KR guy that was going to give me 150-200 yards b/c of all the chances he would get. Players hated it the first year, and now love it b/c now have to think about what D you are taking and when.

It's all good. Like I said, as long as everyone is playing by the same rules....no room for bitching.
I'm just a crotchety old FFL owner who literally translates a 5 second glance at the ESPN crawl into FFL scores in my head. I've been in online leagues and end up just looking at the thing once a week to see what happened in that scoring system. Those don't hold my attention to the point where I don't do them anymore. I used to do 4-5 leagues a year. Now just the one, and the reason is that familiarity w/ the scoring & instant translation in my head. Well, that and the fact that the same guys have been in the league all along (20 years).

well that's pretty cool to have been doing it that long. I've been in both these leagues for just 7 years or so; mostly w/the same groups.
I always say I'm going to limit how much I do, but then I end up on here and then some other one always seems to come up. And that's when I start to hate my life b/c you are bound to be playing guys in 1 league and have to face them in another week in week out. But this year I've decided I won't look at my non money leagues after Sunday Morning until Tuesday. And only track my 2 money leagues.
