BC-FBN…Bears-Orton,0088
URGENT Chicago Bears name Kyle Orton opening day starter Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) … Kyle Orton will start as the Chicago Bears opening day quarterback … beating Rex Grossman in a competition that lasted through training camp and two preseason games. Orton started 15 games in 2005 and three last season. He's completed 233-of-448 passes for more than 2,300 yards and 12 touchdowns. Grossman quarterbacked the Bears to the Super Bowl Forty-One but has been oft-criticized for turning over the football. He has 30 career starts, with 31 TD passes and 33 interceptions. -------------------- ![]() |

Should they trade Rex? Will anyone take him?

Should they trade Rex? Will anyone take him? No, and no. I hope Kyle goes nuts and tears it up... but i suspect Rex will see the field again this year if the O-line starts to gel. Kyle barely sniffed the end zone in pre-season, and threw more INTs than Rex in TC (i think i read by a 2.5:1 ratio)... I think we are just praying for Kyle to do what he did in 2005 and get us a winning season... but if he doesn't play carefully, there is a good chance that we have a shot at Tebow next draft lol Lets just pray that this defense and Hester stay healthy... if that happens we might have a shot at the playoffs again... -------------------- |

Apparently, Rex was right when he basically said "they've seen me play, they know me..."
I think you guys will do better with Orton. Rex carries too much baggage after the past couple of years. His absolute NEED to prove himself is gonna be a constant self-induced pressure that will keep him from doing what we all know he can. He actually, IMO, now at least has a chance to do exactly that (prove himself). There will come a time when he has to go in. That will be his career-defining moment. He'll either save the day and become what he can be, or he'll revert to his mostly bad past and screw things up. If he does, I don't see much more playing time in his future. -------------------- ![]() |

good for the Bears. Good luck this season.
At least this way, they can let ST and Defense actually win the game without having to play with a handicap -------------------- |

Should they trade Rex? Will anyone take him? Trade Rex??? Have you seen what this line is like? Whoever is behind center is in a life-threatening situation!!! Rex will see playing time...because Kyle will be in a coma by mid-season. -------------------- JC is the GREATEST

Now that Orton has been named, I support him 100%. But I'm willing to bet he's booed off the field by the end of the year. No QB can succeed with this offense.
Good luck Kyle!!! Do your best. -------------------- JC is the GREATEST

or maybe the idea was to let orton take the beating while they figure out how to put a o-line together and by then orton will be dead or in intensive care and rex will replace him???

QUOTE Starting against the Chiefs and coming in off the bench versus the Seahawks, Orton won the competition without directing the offense to a touchdown or completing a pass of more than 17 yards. I think it came down to the fact that Rex doesn't recognize the blitz. I only brought up the trade thing because we need lineman and I thought maybe they could make a deal, but I doubt they will. But anyway, let's thing positively.
If I look on the bright side, they were 7-9 last year with two wins against GB, even though they had injuries all over the place, and Kyle was 2-1 as a starter. And they led the league in punt blocks. So special teams and defense will be fun to watch, and if the offense gets better as they go they might be OK. -------------------- ![]() |

It is a sad state of affairs when people are excited that Orton has been named the starter.
