CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bulls drafted two small forwards in the first round of Thursday's NBA draft, trading up to select forward Nikola Mirotic with the 23rd pick and grabbing Marquette forward Jimmy Butler with the 30th pick.
Butler could join the rotation immediately, while it could be years until Mirotic suits up for Tom Thibodeau's team.
Mirotic signed an extension with the Spanish club in late April that keeps him under contract until the 2015-16 season, according to Real Madrid's website.
The 6-8 Butler averaged 15.7 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Butler was strong on the offensive glass, averaging 2.4 offensive rebounds per game in the rugged Big East.
The Bulls traded the No. 28 and 43 picks along with cash considerations to Minnesota to move up five spots and select Mirotic.
In his first season with Real Madrid's senior club, the 6-10 Mirotic averaged 8.1 points per game in 29 league games and 6.6 in 20 Euroleague contests.
ESPN's Chad Ford rated Mirotic as the fifth-best small forward in this year's draft class
W/Much better stuff available, we traded a 1st and 2nd to move up and get a euro stiff who cannot score 8pts per game....and then got another forward. Bad, Bad draft.
Reggie Jackson, Jordan Hamilton, Marshon Brooks, JuJuan Johnson, all better options then a guy that is in a 2 yr contract in Europe who cannot break 10pts a game there. These guys won't make the team, and the Euro will never even get signed.
I think I'll go throw up now.

Nikola Mirotic

- Full Name: Nikola Mirotic
- Position: Forward
- Height/Weight: 6-10 / 220
- Birthdate: February 14, 1991
- College: Real Madrid (Spain)
DRAFTED BY: Houston Rockets Round 1: Pick 23
Strengths:
* Good length with 7-1 wingspan
* Highly efficient shooter with very good range beyond the International 3
* Excellent FT shooter
* Outstanding efficiency rating guy, helps his team in many ways
Weaknesses:
* Needs physical strength and could add some weight to his frame
* Good agility and feet but lacks elite-level athleticism and explosiveness
* Needs to become a better defender and consistent rebounder
NBA projection:
Has mid-first round potential, due to contract and youth, stay in Europe for a couple more years, make a lot of money, then come to NBA...much like Luis Scola or Tiago Splitter did.
2010-11 season:
Has begun to play more and more key minutes on one of the top teams in Europe, and the team has improved along with that adjustment. He has played for Ettore Messina, one of the great coaches in the world, until Messina surprisingly stepped down in mid season.
Key statistics:
2010-11 Real Madrid – Spain ACB: 15 mpg, 8.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg. FG 59%, 3PT 48%, FT 89%
Real Madrid – Euroleague: 14 mpg, 7.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg. FG 61%, 3PT 45%, FT 86%
Cool statistic:
Nikola has played many great games since then, but he has not done anything even close to what he did in January 6th, 2009. Mirotic destroyed the stats sheet in the NIJT Hospitalet game against FMP with his monster numbers: 35 points, 23 rebounds, 9 steals, 6 blocks, 9/9 from the field, 1/1 threes and 14/14 free throws for an overall ranking of 84.
Reminds me of:
Jorge Garbajosa. Poor man's Dirk Nowitzki (obviously there will not be another Dirk, but similar styles).
What the Experts Say:
Carlos Suarez (Real Madrid player)
"It's clear, easy to see. He has a lot of talent and hunger as well as a room to improve. He's seizing his opportunity with Ettore and that's good for the team, we have a new guy contributing in our rotation."
Alberto Angulo (Real Madrid Jr. Team coach)
"He has a great ability to score and rebounds well. Has to improve athletically and gain consistency. His challenge is to compete at the highest level in every game and practice".
Current contract and team:
Real Madrid, Spain (ACB) & Euroleague
Nikola signed a long term contract with Real Madrid (through 2013) and showed no rush to jump to the NBA.
Chris Denker and Carl Berman are Managing Partners of NetScouts Basketball, "The International Basketball Connection."
So good outside shooter, not athletic, big or good on D. How is this a good match for us again? We needed a big guy that could creat his own shot/finish around the rim and every player on this team needs to play D, except Korver apparently. This was about no money on the books. again, he'll never be on this club.

Strengths:
* Versatile
* High basketball IQ/student of the game
* Can guard several positions
* Gets to the free throw line a lot and cashes in
Weaknesses:
* Needs to work on shooting range
* Ball handling needs improvement
NBA projection:
Butler is projected as a shooting guard/small forward, and if he sticks on an NBA roster, it'll be because of his ability, and willingness, to defend. He guarded all five positions at various times during his college career, and though that won’t happen in the NBA, he has the potential to be a lockdown guy on all three perimeter spots. He jousted against the likes of super-quick points Kemba Walker and Tu Holloway in college and did an effective job.
2010-11 Season:
Butler earned honorable-mention All-Big East honors for the second straight season after finishing second on his team in scoring and rebounding and helping lead the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. He carried his solid play into the Portsmouth Invitational, where was chosen the MVP. Butler averaged 18.7 points in three PIT games and was 20-of-31 (.621) from the field and 18-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Key statistics:
15.7 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.4 tpg, 1.4 spg, 34.6 mpg, .490 FG, .345 3PT, .783 FT
Cool statistic:
Butler ranked among the Big East leaders in six categories: scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, offensive rebounds per game and minutes played.
Reminds me of:
Wesley Matthews
What Insiders Say:
Marquette coach Buzz Williams
"Jimmy is the smartest player I've ever coached."
"Being able to have switchables, I've always believed in. But being able to have the switchable that's as intelligent as Jimmy has kind of turned the tide for us, because it allows us to hide some of our deficiencies, but it also allows us to enhance some of the things that I think that we do well. And it allows our guys probably to have more of a defined niche defensively because of Jimmy's ability to adapt to whatever it is that we're doing. Somebody used the word linchpin yesterday. I think that's a really good word, because that's kind of what he is."
Marquette assistant coach Tony Benford
"I call him a utility guy. He can do it all. Great mid range game. He can get to the basket and lives at the free throw line. He’s not afraid of contact. He can shoot the 3 ball. He has a feel for passing. Defensively, it speaks for itself. He can guard a number of positions. He’s just got a great feel for the game."
What Outsiders Say:
Xavier coach Chris Mack
"I don't necessarily worry about who [Butler] guards. Our offense won't change, necessarily, because of the personnel that they use to defend our players.
I worry about the mismatch on the other end. And he has the ability as a 3-man to post up, to offensive rebound, to use his size. And as a 4-man he has the ability to use his quickness, craftiness and ball handling to get to the basket when he's facing a power forward."
Chris Dortch is the editor of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.
Don't we already have good defenders that can't shoot?

DRAFTED BY: Chicago Bulls Round 1: Pick 28

Your browser does not support iframes.

Strengths:
* Can score in variety of ways
* Gets to the free-throw line often
* Good facilitator
* Strong work ethic
* Takes pride in defense
* Good rebounder for his size
Weaknesses:
* Shooting has been inconsistent
NBA projection:
Cole will be drafted late in the first or early in the second round, and given his willingness to work hard could have solid career as a point guard
2010-11 Season:
Was chosen the Horizon League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring, steals and free-throw percentage and finishing second in assists and seventh in rebounding. Broke school single-season scoring record with 780 points. Also broke school record for free throws made (227) and attempted (266).
Key statistics:
21.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 5.3 apg, 2.6 tpg, 2.2 spg, 35.7 mpg, .439 FG, .342 3PT, .853 FT
Cool statistic:
Only two Division I players in the last 15 years put together a 40-point, 20-rebound game. One was Oklahoma's Blake Griffin. The other is Cole, who in February torched Youngstown State with 41 points, 20 boards and nine assists.
Reminds me of:
Toney Douglas
What Insiders Say:
Gary Waters, Cleveland State coach
"He goes out and guards the best player on every team and holds them to single digits. At the same time he's going to score his points, and assist for his team. He does basically everything you could think about for a team to be successful."
What Outsiders Say:
Ryan Blake, NBA Scouting
"He's not just a scorer. He can also run the offense, and he can defend. That is the key."
Someone was drunk last night
Mirotic was selected by the Houston Rockets. His rights were traded to Minnesota and then traded once again to the Bulls. Okay...
Wow, first we were talking about the chances of trading for Dwight Howard and now the Bulls just wasted two draft picks on a Spanish loser. Jesus Christ, can't Chicago teams draft/sign SUPERSTARS once in a while? Damn!
okay then..... so we traded both these guys for that jobber Houston drafted?
