You live in Raleigh, DB? I would have thought that you lived in either Chicago or New York.

I have been to a game in Nashville in January of 2009 when they played my Blackhawks, and though there were several loyal Hawks fans at the game, the arena was by far filled with navy, silver, and gold. The Titans fill LP Field every game and usually hover around the .500 mark or better. Despite the fact that the Titans originated in Houston, the team's greatest and most successful seasons have come while in Nashville; in fact, the Oilers/Titans lone Super Bowl appearance came over 11 years ago.

Nashville must be far different in the population demographic than is Atlanta. Certainly, in terms of money, there are many, many millionaires living in the Greater Nashville Metropolitan Area because of the country music, banking, and telecommunication industries. I don't know how many Nashvillians are transplants since I have only been to the city a handful of times in my life, but I do know that the only sports team that the city does not like is Vanderbilt University's sports teams; in fact, the University of Tennessee's football and men's and women's basketball programs way outdraw Vanderbilt's programs in those same sports, as well as you will see as many or more UT fans at Vanderbilt sporting events than actual Vanderbilt fans, so don't let anyone tell you that every single team that is part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has a big fan following. The most popular team in the state of Tennessee, bar none, is the University of Tennessee football program, which right now is in a rebuilding mode after Phillip Fulmer's style of coaching and strategy sort of left him behind the progression of the game AND Lane Kiffin (now with USC after bolting UT for the school all the sudden) wrecked the football with several NCAA rules violations. Don't let that fool you, though: Nashville area sports are very popular within Nashville with the exception of Vanderbilt University sports.
Yeah dagan 2 VERY different markets, and different loyalties, nashville hokcey did struggle early on( and almost went bankrupt in 2006)
but the City itself is much more "local" and has an air of "their own".. where as both i and Urlgirl have said, atlanta much more about transplants and the big business, that brings in people from all around the country for short periods of time, so never really "adopt" th local teams, wheras nashville transplants mostly in the country music business and 'adopt" nashville as "their home" and as such IMo much more likely to adopt local teams as "theirs"..

See, I didn't know that. I didn't realize that Atlanta was so much a "transplant" type of town. Part of Knoxville, TN, where I live, is like that, out in West Knoxville/Farragut communities, and their politics are altogether different from the rest of Knox County/City of Knoxville. That makes perfect sense, then, why professional sports outside of the Braves and the Falcons, to a certain degree, struggle in Atlanta.

used to live in both : ).. but retired to here, first for a medical reason and then really liked it and as so much cheaper than NY or Chicago could sell my place and live here without having to work anymore, really was appealing. Still do alot of commuting esp to chicago to see games( season ticket holder) and also road games and still go to NY esp around holidays. But having a tax bill 1/10 of what it was up north and housing 1/10 sure made the decsion easy and when miss either city, looking at the 2 different costs of living reminds me why : ).... and having pro hockey here and panthers down the road and of course ACC football/basketball takes care about the Sports jones, and why when talking NC state or UNC players, have a real good knowledge of them as watch them weekly- I'll tell you a funny story you will get a kick out as a bear fan- When Shoop was hired as the OC for butch davis, a bunch of us bear fans went to the home opener wearing our bear gear, and sat behind the bench - and when shoop came over to the bench in before game practice, a bunch of the bears fans in our group started booing him and giving it to him and he turned white and shook his head with a "Damm I can't get away from these guys look " ..LOL

LOL! Poor Shoop can't get away from shit, can he?

I have family from North Carolina, but only one who's from the Charlotte area, and none who live in the Raleigh/Durham area. Most of my relatives who like basketball aren't really partial one way or the other, although they will cheer for Carolina over Duke most any day of the week because they consider the Dukies to be snobs. As far as I know, unless my great uncle who lives in Charlotte likes the Panthers, I don't think anybody gives two shits about them.

As for me, as a Tennessee resident, I hold allegiances to the following teams: the New York Yankees, the Chicago Bears (duh!), the Chicago Blackhawks, the Chicago Bulls, University of Tennessee football/mens and womens basketball, Ohio State football, University of Kentucky basketball. People often ask me why I'm not more of a homer especially in terms of my professional team choices, and my answer is simple: I like those teams before the Predators, the Titans, and the Grizzlies either got here or started to catch on. In terms of college athletics, well, the basketball can be explained because backing in the 1990s, UT basketball was absolutely God awful, while Kentucky was out competing and winning NCAA Championships. Ohio State was just a team I happened upon because my best friend got me interested in following them.

I'll give you another funny story about nashville and titans, our bears group(50+)met a bunch of titans tailgater for a big blast of tailgate at the 2004 bears/titans game in nashville- had a great time, and while usually like to sit in the reg seats, had seats in the VIP section with some of our group.. and one our friends , who is good looking wore blue "TD BEARS" underwear that she would pull down her shorts and shake her booty when we scored( or before game at the tailgate jsut to get crowd going..lol), and so at game when both O's beyond awful( craig crumbles the Qb that day and embarrassing), but when micheal haynes( his ony good play in career), returned an INT for a TD she pulled the shorts down and did the shake, which all the guys in section loved it.. But some hoity toity bible thumper behind us didn't like it and got security( which wasn't a rent a cop, but the state police), who threaten to kick her out for obscenity, and all the guys( even titan ans) start booing the Cop, and unfort she has a mad mouth on her starting cursing at the cop, so he threw her out,, but because nothing bad happens to her- as she is being escorted out, some lady who saw the whole thing was really mad, and tells her "don't worry, you can watch the rest o the game at my trailer" and leaves with her to her husbands million dollar trailer, he was the wife of one of the nascar drivers, and she had a ball there for the rest of the game.

And that game also had one one of the coolest away moments- the titans thought they were going to win all day( and don't blame them as crumbles awful), but a INT for a TD and rmj punt return for td and a titan fumble that lead to a chip shot Fg, made it 17-17 to OT, where befitting this awful "O" game, OGun sacks their QB to stun the crowd and win the game on a safety and the place went dead quiet, until slowly, but surely building started hearing "DAAAAAAA BEEEEASRSSSSSS" Shouting and screaming from all sections of the stadium and the "D" in the endzone started high fiving bear fans in the stands and screaming with us and the DA BEARS just kept getting louder and louder and the stunned titans fans fled the stadium.. : ) just one of theose special Sports moments you never forget.

Report: Cheveldayoff offered Winnipeg GM job

It appears as if True North has found its general manager.

The Winnipeg Free Press reported Sunday that the ownership group of Winnipeg's new NHL franchise has offered the GM position to Kevin Cheveldayoff, who is currently the senior director of hockey operations for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Cheveldayoff, 41, was a first-round draft pick of the New York Islanders in 1988, but injuries prevented him from ever reaching the NHL. He was forced to retire in 1994 after only four seasons in the minor leagues.

If he accepts the position, Cheveldayoff would replace Rick Dudley, who was informed Saturday by True North that he would not be brought from Atlanta to Winnipeg.

    Rick Dudley out in Winnipeg

The owners of Winnipeg's NHL franchise, having told Rick Dudley he won't be retained as general manager, have offered the position to Chicago Blackhawks assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, a source tells ESPN.com.
The team's ownership announced Sunday that Dudley won't be heading north with the Atlanta Thrashers franchise, which was purchased with the intent of moving to Winnipeg last week.
"After meeting with (Dudley) this week, we have decided to go in another direction with the position of general manager of our team," True North Sports & Entertainment chairman Mark Chipman said.
"We informed Rick of our decision late yesterday afternoon, and thanked him for his work in building a foundation and future for this team."
Dudley, who was GM of the Thrashers for the 2010-11 season, met with True North on Thursday. He was told the team would get back to him soon and the answer came Saturday.
Dudley signed a four-year extension in January with the Thrashers.
The team's new GM will decide whether Craig Ramsay and the rest of the team's coaching staff will make the trip north to Winnipeg, a source told ESPN.com.
Craig Heisinger, the GM of the AHL's Manitoba Moose owned by True North, is expected to be part of the Winnipeg front office.
