Canadiens hire Blackhawks' Bergevin as GM
Chicago Blackhawks assistant general manager Marc Bergevin has been named general manager of the Montreal Canadiens.
Montreal team owner, president and CEO Geofff Molson announced the hiring on the team's website and said a news conference to introduce Bergevin would be held Wednesday afternoon.
Bergevin, 46, who played for the Blackhawks for four seasons as a defenseman, has been with the team's front office for seven years in various roles, starting as a scout.
This marks the second consecutive year a Blackhawks assistant general manager has been hired to lead another team's front office. Kevin Cheveldayoff left the Blackhawks to become the Winnipeg Jets' GM last summer.
Bergevin, a Montreal native, takes over a Canadiens team that finished last in the Eastern Conference. He replaces Pierre Guathier, who was fired at the end of the season.
