All well known around these parts but that's beside the point. The guy makes money no matter how shady he may be about doing it. He's a "Rainmaker" and he'll still have to pass NFL muster if he hopes to build a stadium and acquire a team but I wouldn't put it past him.

There are two billionaires in LA that can bring an NFL team here that would never surprise me and Anschutz is one of them. The other is Eli Broad. And both men have been mentioned in local dealings with the NFL. The only thing holding any deal back is BOTH men will insist on some form of ownership in the team.

no doubt, just pointing out like most "rainmakers" he is no saint and has had many shady deals, that while he "made it rain", also screwed others and pretty shady( the native americans have quite a different view of him in wyoming and colorado). and one day i'll have to tell you some very interesting stories on the Qwest IPO and how it was shopped around wall street : )

Aug. 18--Philip Anschutz, Denver's richest man, is a long way from legal prosecution in Qwest's fall from grace, but the glare of publicity may be punishment enough for the intensely private billionaire, associates said last week.

But last week, the publication branded him as the greediest executive in America for selling $1.57 billion worth of Qwest stock before the share price collapsed. Anschutz topped a list that included the disgraced Gary Winnick, founder of bankrupt Global Crossing, and Denver's own John Malone, who cashed out of AT&T before it tumbled.

"For the ordinary investor, it is nearly impossible to look at this list and not feel ripped off," the article said. "In some cases, insiders clearly cheated the investment community to realize their gains -- by ginning up revenue numbers that have turned out to be phony." Anschutz's stunning reversal of fortune shoved the man who prefers to work behind the scenes into the headlines of the hottest story in corporate America -- the accounting meltdowns that masked massive profit-taking by top executives.

But don't expect the elusive billionaire to give speeches while he's on center stage. Anschutz hasn't granted an interview in decades.

Eli Broad is no saint either but to me his history is a bit cleaner than Phil Anschutz's. I brokered through SunAmerica Securites for many years which is one his many other ventures aside from his home building empire.

Well the true "Rainmakers" of the 30's dust bowl days were pretty shady hustlers too. They were in business to take $$$, not necessarily to make rain. I'd like to hear the Wall Street story on the IPO though.
