Berrian struggles with unclear role
In six games, the Vikings wide receiver has only seven receptions for 72 yards and no touchdowns. He has two catches in three games since Randy Moss arrived.
There has been some debate about whether Randy Moss could have made more of an effort to catch Brett Favre's final pass on fourth down Sunday night against Green Bay with 28 seconds left.
But a closer look at the film also revealed there was a better option than Moss. Wide receiver Bernard Berrian was open in the right corner of the end zone. Berrian called that "more of a tossup play," making it clear there were no set reads for Favre and that the quarterback just has to decide where to throw.
"There were a couple of times during the game [I was open]," Berrian said. "It's how it happens. I can't focus on stuff like that. I have to go out. I focus on that, I'm not going to do what I need to do."
That play summed up how things have gone for Berrian this season. He had a season-long 30-yard catch against the Packers, but that was his only reception in the game. In six games, Berrian has only seven receptions for 72 yards and no touchdowns. He has two catches in three games since Moss arrived.
Berrian, who signed a six-year, $42 million contract that included a $16 million signing bonus in March 2008, was asked if this is what he bargained for when he made the move from Chicago. "Obviously not," he said. "I wouldn't have come if this was what the deal was going to be."
Nonetheless, Berrian called himself "a positive person," adding, "I don't focus on negative stuff anyway. That's what keeps me going."
The Vikings traded for Moss in part because Berrian did not establish himself as the No. 1 receiver with Sidney Rice sidelined because of a hip injury. But Moss' arrival has meant Berrian's role isn't clear at all. "I don't know, it's kind of hard," he said when asked about that fact. "It's hard to get it really defined or set in words, I guess you could say. The way I look at it, I just try to make the best of my opportunities."
As for whether he feels his future is in Minnesota, Berrian said: "I hope so. That's the way you look at it, that's why I signed here."
