Packer fans don't bitch about his drafting, they bitch about how little he goes after free agents. Conversely, when I see Bear fans bitching about JA it's usually about his drafting.
yes justin harrell, brian brohm, aj hawk, patt lee, brandon jackson, etc etc just super-duper draft picks.. oh wait.. just because packer fans don't complain as loud as bear fans.. doesn't mean the picks are good.. hawk like benson a top 5 bust, but bear fans complain 10X louder.. same for harrell, heck tommie harris made 3 probowl's.. and harrell just 3 IR lists, and bears fans complain more about harris, than packer fans complain about harrell, despite harrell 100X the bust harris was.. just because packer fans accept crap doesn't mean it still isn't crap

"if" angelo had drafted harrell, there would 1,000's of threds still about what an awful pick it was and how it sucked.. yet on packers you hardly hear about harrell for the difference in the 2 fan bases

Nothing too surprising here. Hawk isn't worth Urlacher/Lewis kind of money so this is the solution for negotiating a better deal for the Packers. I'm sure he'll get some looks/offers but not for that kind of money. In the end I'm betting that he sticks around GB. Would he really want to leave a Super-Bowl team?

With Finley coming back Lee becomes expendable so that's a no brainer and I don't even recall even hearing Martin's name much.

There were threads about Harrell on every Packer board I've ever been to. Hell, there were even threads bitching about us taking Rodgers and Matthews.

The difference is his good picks outweigh his bad picks as there aren't many busts. He takes risks on picks at times and sometimes they don't work out, but we trust him because he's proven to be a good drafter.

He wasnt cut because he was a bust...he was cut because he isnt worth that 10.5M this year. Im fairly certain this was nothing but a money move, and wouldnt be surprised if they re-sign him for less.

he's a "bust" as a top 5 pick( and salary that comes with that).. which you want a playmaker in the draft for that position. if hawk was a late round pick like a hunter hillenmayer than he wouldnt be a bust and servicable $2 mill-$3 mill player and late round pick.. but as a top 5 over-all pick, he is bust. IMO

They may have overreached at him @#5, but i wouldnt go on a limb and call him a bust...and as Bears fans, we have a pretty good idea of what a "bust" is. Overreached? sure. Bust? Eh, not really...not in comparison to some of our stellar first round choices.

at top of draft( first 2 rounds) he is under 50% how is that good outweighs bad?

    busts- terrence murphy,hawk, harrell, brohm,jackson,pat lee(6)

    hits- rodger's,jennings,collins,mathews,raji(5)

    middling- colledge and nelson(2)

2010- too early ( though neal went IR)

    and from 3rd on:

    hits-jolly(but with suspension arguable)spitz,jennings,rodger's,flynn,sitton,fine ly,mathews, raji

    busts-underwood,coston,hawkins,montgomery,bragg,campbell ,whiticker,tollefson,culver,moll,martin,cory rodgers,hodge,swain,thompson,lee,brohm,jbrad jones,underwood,meridith,quinn johnson,

middling-poppinzits,blackman( could be a bust),colledge, giacomo, nelson, wynn,tj lang, hawk( becuase a top 5 pick arguable a bust)

    2010- too soon:

So have 9 hits, 21 busts, 8 middling 9(ok picks),, which again well below the 50% average or the claim "his good picks outweigh his bad. and not many busts"..

Agent: Packers 'putting the finishing touches' on new deal with Hawk

    By Nate Davis, USA TODAY

Packers GM Ted Thompson's desire to retain ILB A.J. Hawk could be rewarded, perhaps prior to the expiration of the NFL collective bargaining agreement Thursday night.

Mike McCartney, Hawk's agent, wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press that he and the Packers are "putting the finishing touches" on a new contract for Hawk, who was released Wednesday.

Thompson noted yesterday: "With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision. We're hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future."

Hawk had been slated to earn $10 million in 2011.

Hawk, the fifth overall pick out of Ohio State in the 2006 draft, had one of his best years in Green Bay's championship season, registering 111 tackles and adding career highs with 10 passes defensed and three interceptions.

The Packers could have a logjam on the inside next year with former starter Nick Barnett due to return from a season-ending wrist injury. Desmond Bishop stepped in next to Hawk and played so well that Thompson gave him a four-year extension.

why do you have to compare him to bear picks? why not just compare him objectively to the NFL? if you find him a good pick at #5, we shall agree to disagree what you want from a top 5 pick.. And for comparision at OLb i'd take briggs(3rd round)over hawk for what a good OLB draft pick looks like of do want to compare to bear draft picks
