Green Bay Packers Packers Release A.J. Hawk

    Wednesday, March 2, 2011
    Packers release A.J. Hawk

The Green Bay Packers have released linebacker A.J. Hawk after the former first-round pick was scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011.

    "They did what?"

"With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision," general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. "We're hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future."

Hawk, drafted fifth overall in 2006, had 111 tackles in 2010 after finishing with less than 90 tackles in each of the previous two seasons. Hawk also had three interceptions this season and has played in all 80 regular-season games since then with 77 starts.

The Super Bowl Champions also cut tight end Donald Lee and safety Derrick Martin.
Lee has spent six seasons with Green Bay after being drafted in the fifth round by Miami in 2003. His best season came in 2007 when he caught 48 passes for 575 yards and six touchdowns.

"We want to thank Donald for all of his contributions to the Packers and for being a good teammate throughout his career in Green Bay," Thompson said in the statement.

"He has been a professional and we wish him well in the future."

Lee was set to earn $2.2 million in 2011, while Martin was slated to make $750,000.

    Packers cut A.J. Hawk

We didn’t expect Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk to see the $10.5 million he’d be guaranteed on the first day of the league year, and now it’s official that he won’t.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Packers have released Hawk.
However, that doesn’t mean Hawk is gone for good. According to Schefter, there are some who believe a new deal for Hawk is coming, and he’ll stay in Green Bay.
Hawk was the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft, and although he’s started every game but three in his first five NFL seasons, he hasn’t been quite the star the Packers thought they were drafting. So it’s no surprise he won’t be getting that $10.5 million. Even if the Packers are still able to keep him around.

That's a balzy move. He's gonna get a lot of hits from a lot of other teams.

Really not surprising given the amount of money he's due to receive compared to his productivity thus far. He definitely hasn't been the big play maker we thought we were getting when we drafted him, however he's been fairly solid (but not $10 million solid).

Desmond Bishop played quite well when he was placed in the lineup after Barnett was put on IR, so maybe that made the decision a little easier. My guess is we'll try to resign him for less money. Looks like we'll be drafting another LB this offseason.

If it were me making the decision, however, and was forced to choose between Barnett and Hawk I would cut Barnett in a heartbeat based on age and character alone.

according to the second story posted, they are likely to re-sign him at a cheaper rate

I have no doubt they will Benj; I'm just saying it now is possible for other teams to come in and try and make offers for his services.

makes thomspon 0-2 with his first #1 picks on packers in hwk and justin harrell...he's never lived up to the Hype or being a playmaker as a top 5 pick.. though did bette as an isnide Lb this year... hope some teams bid up his service, so hurts the packs's cap space which is shrinking fast if they decide to try and resign, if i'm his agent i'm looking before signing a thing..

Yet he could make all his draft picks by drawing random names out of a hat and still be a better drafter than Angelo.
