A Little Help For Me/Benji, Please..........

Benji has taken the position that you are a bust if you aren't playing the position you were drafted to play. I countered by pointing that many succesful NFL players (WR's primarily) were college QB's when drafted. I'm not trying to embarass him but just want to point out how wrong his logic is on viewpoint.

Marlin Briscoe - college QB/pro WR
Tony Dungy - college QB/pro DB

Is this strictly for qb's?

Well in the post that this idea came from Benji challenged me to name as many college QB's who became productive NFL players at other positions as I could. Primarily WR, but I think TE's, RB's and DB's should also be in the mix but separated by NFL position. Just thought it would be an interesting offseason memory excercise and player hunt.

The link I posted in the thread starter lists some of the current ones but I know there have been quite a few others from previous era's. List whoever comes to mind if it's verifiable.

The point is that they've successfully made the transition from college QB to WR, TE, or RB spots in the NFL. By your twisted logic any of these guys would be considered a bust because they aren't playing QB in the pros. Tell me that you'd call a guy like Hines Ward a bust!

Here are three more from before your time (those count too) who immediately come to mind. None of these guys were busts either.

Max McGee - RB to WR

Benji, since I don't have the time to complete this list I'm gonna post a thread asking our compatriots to add to as they remember guys who've been college QB's that have been successful at other positions in the NFL. I'm gonna do it just because of this sarcastic response.

I am NOT saying these players are busts. I said they were busts at the positions they were drafted at, and the teams made better use of them in other areas! Hester as a CB was God-awful. A bust of a defensive player, which he was drafted at and even played at for a game or so. After realizing this they moved him elsewhere where his talents could shine. A place he was not drafted at.

Again, a bust as far as what he was drafted to do, but NOT a bust as a player in the NFL.

"Should" is a matter of opinion and it's relative to what as expected in the first place. Some players at some postions take longer to develop than others ie; WR's, LT's, OC's to name some examples. So at exactly what point should they be playing like a first rounder and what exactly does that mean? Just because you call them a bust doesn't mean that they are.

This is the one that led to my using an example of how many college QB's became very productive players at WR in the NFL
despite being drafted as QB's out of college. Neither one of us knows what they were drafted to do because some, like your
example of Hester, had the ability to play any one of several postions.

Do I understand what you're saying now that you've had the time to examine just what you posted and bend your interpretation of it a little? Yes I do, but my earlier posts to you and this thread are based on what you posted then, that which is bold faced and in quotes, not your current interpretation of what you meant.

If you want to know the truth it was your last post which basically said "show me", as if you somehow thought that I couldn't, that led me to start this thread. I even told you that I would, not to embarass you, but to prove that I knew what I was talking about. I don't say things like that when I can't prove it.

I thought it might be some fun as an excercise in players history for all of us. Do some research on your own and see what you come up with.

Oh, and here's another one; Eldridge Dickey - college QB/NFL WR.

He was just an example.

Anquan Boldin played qb sometimes in college as did hines ward

and if doing for all positions, alot of DT became O-lineman

Brad Smith (Jets) was a QB, now WR. Matt Jones (Bengals I think) was a QB, now WR. Those are the ones that popped into my head, but I'm sure there are others.

But more to soulman's point, I don't really think any of them (Ward, Randle El, Smith, Jones) were drafted to be QB's. They were drafted as athletes that could be utilized at other positions.

I'd also like to point out that Urlacher was a safety in college. Hardly a bust because he was converted to LB. Defense sees these types of shifts more often than offense, perhaps because teams are more willing to embrace the thought of coaching them up on that side of the ball.
