    Chicago Bears 2011 offseason

Analyzing our offseason wish-list & needs by positional priority, I come up with the following:

Tier 1 – Vital Needs (clear starting-caliber player)
    1a) OT/LT
    1b) UT who can pass-rush
    3) OG

    Tier 2 – Important Needs (probable/potential starting-caliber player)
    4) big WR
    5) CB opposite of Tillman

Tier 3 – Depth/Developmental Needs (backup player for now)
    6) OG/C to groom behind Kreutz
    7) WR with size to groom behind #4
    8) LB to groom for the future

Other than picking up a scrub for QB3 (certainly via FA), we don’t have any other significant positional needs @ S, RB, TE, QB, etc. and I’m assuming we no-brainer re-sign Kreutz for 2 years. I’m putting FA after the draft since that looks like how it’s going to play out chronologically anyway. So here goes…

    Draft
Rd. 1—OT: Carimi, Costanzo, or (if not considered a stretch) Sherrod
    Rd. 2—UT: Austin or Nevis
Rd. 3—CB: Davon House, Curtis Brown, Brandon Burton, or Jalil Brown [BAP]
Rd. 4 or 5—WR: Tandon Doss, Greg Little, Terrance Tolliver, Austin Pettis, or (maybe) Stephen Burton [BAP]
Rd. 4 or 5—LB: Greg Jones, Nate Irving, Mario Harvey, Lawrence Wilson, or Eric Gordon [BAP]
Rd. 6—OG/C: Tim Barnes, Jake Kirkpatrick, or Alex Linnenkohl [BAP]

    Free Agency
    OG—Blaylock or Joseph
    WR—Floyd or Rice
QB3—doesn't matter, just anyone not named “Todd” or “Collins”

I realize there is considerable play in rounds 3-6 as you aren’t drafting likely ’11 “impact players” so the picks there are going to come down much more to Best Available Player within SEVERAL positions rather than Best Available Player within ONE position like in rounds 1-2. My quasi-realistic/quasi-dream draft would be:

    Carimi
    Austin/Nevis
    House
    Jones
    Tolliver/Pettis/Burton
    Linnenkohl

I have been under the impression that the Bears will do as they traditionally do and go for a CB in the fourth round. Otherwise, this is a very good analysis. I like the idea of potential players to sign in free agency, particularly if it includes one Davin Joseph or either of the two WRs you mentioned.

I would like Carimi in the first round, but I would just as soon have Sherrod for all the difference. Costanzo will be long gone by the 29th overall pick, so we can kiss that one goodbye. Carimi will likely go a few picks ahead of us, so my bet is that we will either be stuck with someone like Nate Solder, or more likely, Derek Sherrod.

I can live with Sherrod (he's gotta be better than Frank O. who would be starting for virtually no other team).

    Let me ask you this:

If the only OTs left were Sherrod/Solder AND Liuget was also around at #29, who would you take from those 3?

Read this list from WalterFootball.com and tell me what you think. You might be shocked at who is ranked ahead of who on this list.

    Here's the link: http://walterfootball.com/draft2011OT.php

I think any of those OT projected to go in the first round (even Ojalana [SP?]) would be good for the Bears. They all got positive reviews by scouts throughout the season, at their senior exhibition bowls, as well as at the Combine. If Liuget comes available in the early second round, I can see trading up for him, but otherwise, as far as defensive tackles are concerned, I would just settle for Drake Nevis or Marvin Austin.

Let's be honest, at least 4 OTs (Castonzo, Solder, Carimi, Smith) will be long gone before the 29th pick. So IF the Bears want to go OL in the first round then it's gotta be OT Derrek Sherrod or OG Mike Pouncey.

    I'd go:

    1st - OT or OG
    2nd - DT
    3rd - CB
    4th - WR
    5th - LB
    6th - C

Then you take Pouncey. He's a sure thing at his postion whereas Sherrod is not. Pouncey would rate ahead of Sherrod on just about everyone's draft board.

What do you all think of OT Joseph Barksdale out of LSU? Word is that he is the best technician in his class, and may go anywhere within the second to fourth rounds. He might be a sleeper.

Word is you have been reading too much Walter Football, who is up on his jock while everyone else sees the huge lateral mobility problems he displayed far too often in college. I like his chances at OG, the the fact that he has one of the heaviest kickslides I've seen make shim a giant hell no at LT and suspect at RT.

Pouncey's going somewhere right around 20, and maybe even as early as the Lions, so it's a long shot.

The Lions would be wiser to go after Tyron Smith since they have like the 13th pick. He is projected to go at that point, and I think that would be a wise move to make on their part.

Pouncey is being projected as a low first round draft pick by several media outlets, one of whom I saw said that the Bears would pick him at number 29.
