Jim finks and not even close... he took the vikes to the "puple people eater glory of 1970s.. took the bears who were in complete dissaray at time back to the 1980's glory.. and then in his best job took the "aint's who never had made the playoff's or had a winning seaosn and got them the playoff's ach year and 11 wins.. he is the best
The long and short of it, was halas while in Semi-retirement in the 70's had brought in finks, but still couldnt let go of everything, so the 2 of them sort of clashed at times-and halas had wanted to slowly turn the reigns over to hs son "mugs".. but when mugs unexpectedly died, most expected finks to be named president, and instead halas named himself aagain and finsk wasn't too happy.. then when armtstrong was fired as the coach( and finks wans;t even made aware by halas he was doing it), Finks talked to george allen, who used to be the Assistant HC on bears in the 1960's and wanted to coach the bears.. and instead without consulting finks, halas hired Ditka and that was the last straw for finks, who despite wning 5% of the bears at the time, knew his days were numbered

I always knew that Halas was a cantankerous old coot. Doug Atkins used to tell my dad about him all the time, how he was an asshole to deal with, etc. I had no idea that he was like that, though, with his GM. If Halas had known what was good for him, the Bears would have had the dynasty in the 1980s and not the 49ers or the Redskins.

Thinking back on those "Black and Bruise Brothers" Olines most of those guys came in within one or two years of one another didn't they? I think Covert and Van Horn were a year apart. Hilgy and Becker were a bit before and I thought and Thayer and Bortz a little after. But they all came on board between around 81-83 didn't they?
halas by nature and by life experience a really hard person to define in one sentance or one paragraph.. He could be an asshole one minute, the next your best buddy, he could fight a player tooth and nail over a $500 raise for year.. in next minute he would pay all the medical bills( many thousands ) for the same player if he got in an accident and never ask for anthing or want credit for it...
And when you spent 30+ years as the founder and basically the head of football and seeing to grow so much really has to color alot of what you do.. and just IMO, he really has pushing and had all his eggs in the "mugs basket" to keep the bears in the family and Mugs would keep the Dynasty of chicago football going, his unexpected death, really took the rug out from halas feet and he never recovered from it
