Pennington tears knee ligament
MIAMI (AP)—Hard-luck quarterback Chad Pennington(notes) tore an anterior cruciate ligament in a pickup basketball game and will undergo surgery next week.
Pennington’s agent, Tom Condon, said in a news release Thursday that Pennington will have the operation April 7 and well-known surgeon Dr. James Andrews will perform it. The release did not say which knee Pennington injured.
The former Jets and Dolphins quarterback is now a free agent.
The 34-year-old Pennington twice has been selected the NFL Comeback Player of the Year, but he lasted just two plays last season with the Dolphins before hurting his right shoulder again. He had surgery on it for the fourth time, but said he wants to try to return to the NFL this season.
A shoulder injury ended Pennington’s 2009 season in Week 3. Following arduous rehabilitation, he began 2010 as a backup to Chad Henne(notes), then made his season debut in the ninth game when he started against Tennessee. But he had to leave the game after only two snaps with a dislocated shoulder and torn capsule.
Pennington’s career completion percentage of 66.0 is the highest in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 attempts. In 2008, his one full season with the Dolphins, Pennington led them to their only playoff berth since 2001.
He led the Jets to the playoffs in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

What a pussy! This is a damn football message board. If you can't handle people being jerks just because they can, you shouldn't be hooked up to the Internet.

Just wondering if Pennington bothered to insure himself against that possibility. Pick up BB games in the offseason can be kind of dangerous to ones health.

I can recall when Aaron Boone tore up one of his ACL ligaments in a pickup basketball game during the offseason after he had hit that big home run to clinch the American League Championship over the Red Sox. Luckily, we signed Alex Rodriguez that offseason or else that would have been a huge loss to us for 2004. The Yankees wound up releasing him if I recall since he violated the terms of his contract.
