John elway on bronco Qb"we do not have a fran

john elway on bronco Qb" we do not have a franchise Qb"

    Broncos eyeing quarterbacks Aaron Wilson

Why are the Denver Broncos spending so much time and resources investigating the quarterback draft class?

Well, executive John Elway is pretty sure there's no John Elway currently on the roster.
The Broncos are working out Washington quarterback Jake Locker today and have also spent time evaluating Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick and several other passers. For now, veteran Kyle Orton is the starter and Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn are his backups.

“Well the bottom line is at that position, everybody realizes how important that position is," Elway told 104.3 The Fan in Denver, per SportsRadioInterviews.com. "And anytime you have the draft position we have — second in the draft — you have to look at everybody. And we’re looking at every position, not only the quarterback position, but that seems to get the most attention because of what we have here. But obviously if there’s a guy there that’s a franchise guy there, we definitely have to look at it because we’re not sure we have a franchise guy on our team right now.

"So obviously we’ve got to visit that, look at it, and do our due diligence on it and then we’ll make our decision from there. But no, it’s not a smokescreen. We realize, and I realize, how important that position is, and if there’s a franchise guy there that we know is a franchise guy, we’d have to look at it.”

The Broncos could wind up with one of the top defensive linemen like Marcell Dareus, Nick Fairley or Da'Quan Bowers or blue-chip cornerback Patrick Peterson. They're not expected to draft Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton.

Defensive line might be the way to go for Denver.

“It is just because of the fact that it’s so hard to be able to find guys with that size that have athletic ability," Elway said of defensive linemen. "Whether they’re raw coming out of college or they’re polished coming out of college, people see that athletic ability with the size and the speed. You just can’t find that, it’s very difficult to find those type of athletes that are that big later in the draft. That’s why I think you see so many of those guys with the speed and the size do not go very deep in the draft.”
Elway said he's enjoying his new duties.

“I am," he said. "It’s been great. Obviously it’s been a lot of work but it’s something that I was hoping to have the opportunity to do for a long time. And that opportunity arose. I really enjoy it. I don’t call it work when you enjoy doing what you’re doing and that’s why it’s been a thrill. Getting Coach Fox in here has been a joy, I mean he’s been really refreshing for this whole building — his energy and his wisdom about the game of football is tremendous. So it’s been great working with him, as well as Brian (Xanders), and getting to know everybody in the building.”

The Broncos need to rebuild their defense before doing anything else offensively so that 1st pick will almost certainly go for either a DT or a DE. CB is a need to but with Bailey in the fold it's not as big as the Dline. Dumervil and former 1st rounder Robert Ayers who were LB's in the 3-4 will move back to DE in Fox's 4-3 so the bigger need is at DT where they have no one of high worth. You can pretty much bank on them taking either Dareus or Fairley whichever they think rates higher.

I could see them taking a QB in the second though. Elway knows what we all have known for years. Orton can win you games but he'll never win you a championship. Tebow is entertaining but very raw as an NFL QB and Quinn is on his way out of the league. I bet Elway wishes he had that trade with the Browns back. Payton Hillis for Brady Quinn was a joke. Hillis was a guy I wished we could have gotten. There would have been our FB and short yardage back. Much better overall than Taylor.

While agree their bigger need is "D".. this is what hopes ( and maybe not denver specifically, but one of the other teams) that many project to a DT or OT.. falls in love with one of the Qb's, and takes them instead,, making one of the projected Top DT/OT fall down the draft to us,, creates a kind of domino effect...

    we can wish.. : )

Just can't see Denver taking anything but a defensive player in the first though they may be a partner for a trade for our #29 for their #36 if they're looking to get a QB at that spot. If they don't plan on starting Orton they need to get rid of him and his contract so this might be a place to find a guy who can come in and compete with Tebow but with a much smaller paycheck.

They want a second for Orton so if some team can't get who they're looking for late one or early two they may be able to trade Orton and get close to their price (late second/early third) once the CBA is negotiated. Trouble is that may not come in this draft. Either way you look at it they really don't want to pay Orton $8 mil when they're in a rebuilding phase and have no chance of becoming a contender in 2011.

If we could still get a guy we like at #36 and pick up Denver's 3rd in exchange I could see that as a distinct possibility. Take the DT at #36 and have a late second and early third for Oline and CB or WR. What do you think?
