Mike Vrabel charged with theft from riverboat casino

Kansas City linebacker Mike Vrabel was arrested yesterday and charged with theft from a riverboat casino. The Switzerland County sheriff's department said Vrabel, 35, was arrested at 5:30 a.m. and released about 5 hours later on $600 cash bond. He was charged with a class D felony. “It was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and I take full responsibility for the miscommunication,” Vrabel said in a statement issued through his agent. “I feel comfortable that after talking with the appropriate parties, we will resolve this matter.” The incident happened at the Belterra Casino in Florence, Ind. A call to the security department of the casino was not immediately returned. Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots, is a member of the NFLPA executive committee and one of the plaintiffs in the players' antitrust lawsuit against the NFL.

A federal judge in Minnesota has decided to combine two requests to halt the NFL lockout. U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson said yesterday she will hear arguments from attorneys for Tom Brady, Drew Brees and other current players, as well as attorneys for retired players. The current players and retirees have filed similar antitrust lawsuits against the league in addition to their requests for an injunction to stop the lockout. The arguments will be heard tomorrow.

Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL will insist its next labor deal with players includes testing for human growth hormone. After appearing yesterday with U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings at a high school to speak about the dangers of steroid use, Goodell said the NFL needs to do more to keep banned substances out of the sport. HGH use is prohibited by the NFL, but the league currently does not test for it.

Foul!!!!!! You don't even know what the alleged theft was all about yet. This article doesn't say what was taken only that he was arrested. There hasn't even been an indictment yet but your post seems to make him guilty as charged. Let's find out the details of what this so called misunderstanding is all about before we hang the guy ok.

I think we still go by innocent until proven guilty here in the good old USA. If he truly is guilty of theft as charged fine, but if not will you post a thread on his aquittal or one if the charges are dropped?

he took alcohol bottles..and yes there is an indictment because he was arrigned and had to post bail..and Soul, just found it funny that the vocal guy gets in trouble, no need to be so serious,,, cmon!

The matter involves a bar tab and some confusion over how many beers should be on it, a source with knowledge of the situation told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfota.

Indiana Gaming Commission director of enforcement Kenny Rowan told Kansas City television station KMBC that Vrabel was observed by an enforcement agent taking bottles of alcohol from a deli without paying for them. He said Vrabel was very cooperative during the investigation and posed no problems during the arrest.

In Indiana, theft of any sort, regardless of the monetary value, is a felony. The matter is expected to be resolved within days, the source told La Canfora, with a dismissal for want of prosecution expected, given the nature of the misunderstanding and nominal value of the few beers in question.

"We are aware of the reports regarding Mike Vrabel, but we are not permitted to have contact with Mike at this time," the Chiefs said in a statement posted on their Twitter page. "We understand that Mike has communicated publicly that the matter is a misunderstanding for which he takes full responsibility. We hope it is resolved for Mike in a positive way."

Vrabel is on the NFLPA's executive committee and was present during the negotiations at the federal mediator George H. Cohen's office in Washington D.C in February and March.

He is also one of 10 players named as a plaintiff in the Brady et al v. the National Football League et al antitrust lawsuit. Arguments in the case are scheduled to be heard in Minnesota on Wednesday.

LOL, I wasn't being anymore serious than I'd be with you if we were talking about it over a couple of beers. My point was that the article you posted didn't go into enough detail to draw any conclusions from other than the fact that he was arrested and charged with theft.

Even though Vrabel claimed that it was a simple misunderstanding, which it appears to be, you seem to maintain that he's no better than the owners whom he called cheats and liars because of it. It isn't ironic at all because what he did doesn't seem to be deemed as being intentional. It's two different offenses the way I see it.

The NFL.com article goes into detail as to what was taken and why he was charged with a felony. The first article posted doesn't so it would be much easier to draw a wrong conclusion from only that info. It also seems likely that the charges will be dismissed for want of prosecution which to me says someone pushed a panic button over the whole mess that shouldn't have been pushed. It was a mistake on a bar tab as to how many beers had been purchased versus the number taken from what I believe was a self serve casino deli and not stolen bottles of alcohol as if he were caught swiping something from behind a bar or from a liquor store.

The fact that he was charged with a felony was a requirement of Indiana State Law. There wasn't an option to charge him with a lesser misdemeanor which the first article doesn't fully disclose. In most other places it would not have been a felony because of the nominal amount involved. Also the fact that he posted bail shortly after arrest wouldn't necessarily indicate an indictment. In most instances bail is granted before appearing before the court to answer to the charges and enter a plea.
