if we draft him for the 3 tech we wont see anything out of him for at least three years until he develops into that role and no guarantee he will either. I think his biggest value is a DE in a 3-4. I just dont see him against NFL talent being that penetrating DT

Another country heard from. We saw this before in a brief comment but I thought reprint the article that discusses it further. This is one of the reasons that I find mocks virtually useless most of the time. Both Kiper and McShay have the Bears taking Marvin Austin, that we seem to agree may happen, but Kiper sees him being taken at pick #62 while McShay has him at pick #29.
In defense of his position on this he claims that the talent level in this draft drops dramatically in the mid 20's and anyone of 15-20 players all rate about the same. While that may or may not be true his contention that Austin is the only true 3t UT still on the borad at that point so that justifies the reach since he believes Austin won't last until pick #62. Obviously Kiper disagrees but then again he has us taking Solder in the first and I think that way wrong.
I like McShay's projection of Austin and Ijalana with our first two picks but I still think we could pull that off if we traded back into the second for Austin. The extra 3rd round pick we'd get could come in handy.

ESPN experts both think Bears will draft Marvin Austin

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – ESPN draft experts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay are both predicting that the Bears will draft North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin, albeit in different rounds.
North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin was suspended for the entire 2010 season.Kiper thinks the Bears will take Austin in the second round, while McShay sees them choosing the 6-2, 309-pounder with the 29th pick in the first round.
“Austin carries a second-round grade and would be a reach here,” McShay writes, “but there is a big drop-off in this class in the mid-20s and at this point the Bears could take any of about 15-20 players and not see a big difference in talent level.
“That offsets some of the reach, and the Bears are also desperate for an impact 3-technique tackle who can anchor the front in their Tampa 2 system. Austin is the only tackle on the board with the potential to do that, and if the Bears do their homework and are comfortable they have answered any character questions and can keep Austin focused, this could be an interesting surprise pick.”
Austin was suspended for the entire 2010 season after an NCAA investigation found that he had accepted improper gifts from an agent. He had blossomed a year earlier as a junior, recording 42 tackles, six tackles-for-loss and four sacks while earning second team All-ACC honors.
Kiper predicts that the Bears will select Colorado offensive tackle Nate Solder with the 29th pick.
“I’ve said before that Chicago should be thrilled if Solder is available here,” Kiper writes in his latest mock draft. “He has added bulk to a 6-foot-8 frame, making him a guy who could help in a run game … Chicago let Jay Cutler take far too many hits over the past two seasons. Mike Martz will run the ball if he can block for it. Solder has the frame to become a bulldozer, and the athleticism to move along the line and help on either side.”
Kiper thinks the Bears will pick Penn State center/guard Stefen Wisniewski in the third round (94th).
McShay is predicting that the Bears will take Villanova tackle Ben Ijalana in the second round (62nd) and Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas in the third round (94th).
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.
Restore the roar!

I think if we just have to jump at one in the first it will be Wilkerson. He may not be the ideal build for a 3t UT but he's still a guy who can get into the backfield and go on search and destroy missions. Much like Liuget he also rates fairly well as a 5t DE so even if he isn't the greatest UT in the world his flexibility makes him pretty valuable.
I was referring to Ballard in my last post. The only downside i see in him is size...
