They ask for and get a second which they use in a trade down to pick a QB from that pile rated to go late in one or early in the second round. Only this year that trade can't happen. The Broncos are stuck with Orton and don't have the extra second to trade down with.
It's a hypothetical yes, but it's illustrative of the kind of deal that can't be done without a CBA or and end to the lockout. The deal we made for Cutler two years ago couldn't have happened under these conditions either. I think that it will have a bigger impact than you realize.
yep.. If had a CBA, i'd say eagles with kolb, redskins and mcnabb, maybe orton and donkey's all might ahve been making trades already with teams not enomored by the qb Class this year, but could use a vet.. and really would throw the first round into a frenzy- add to that some of the RFA's may have been trade bait for other trades and all that missing makes for a deadly quiet before draft

Titans G.M.: “What the heck? Let’s make a few trades”
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 19, 2011, 2:10 PM EDT
AP NFL fans have grown restless with no offseason activity to follow during the lockout. But coaches and front office executives — a collection of workaholics whose lives revolve around football — are even more restless.
That’s why Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt foresees a lot of trades coming during the upcoming NFL draft.
“For some reason I think there’s probably going to be a little bit more [trading], but I can’t really tell you why,” Reinfeldt told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “I just have a gut that people are kind of anxious to do something and say, ‘What the heck? Let’s make a few trades.’”
As long as the lockout is going on, players cannot be traded. So all teams can do is trade draft picks. But once those draft picks start coming off the board, Reinfeldt thinks his colleagues will be anxious to do all they can. It’s the only chance they’ll have to do substantive work until the lockout ends.

In this draft there really is not anyone unless we can get in the A.J Green, Marcel Dareus range.
I might make a short jump up if the OT that I really like ia available. But the more I read the more I realize that Costanzo is not that much better than Carimi or Sherrod.

now you know why Im so much into the trading down mode. I saw this before the season started. That is part of the reason why I panicked even more about the oline going into next season. But thanks to the defense like usual we got to the playoffs. I believe with what we have to trade we cant touch the top 15 so really Green and Dareus isnt happening

We don't need to trade up in the first round to land a player. We can move up and get a player in later round vs stock piling 7th round picks.

I'm with you mo and I just posted that I'd be more inclined to trade down and have two 2nds and two 3rds than to reach for anyone at #29 OT or not. Tice loves Carimi and if he did get within 2 picks of us we could trade down to #27 for the cost of a fourth or maybe even a 2012 pick. Another two or three spots would cost us a 3rd rather than gaining one from a trade down.
The waters are so muddy around that #29 pick that unless we get very lucky and someone we love falls it's tough to see value at that spot at any area of need.

We can dream on. Jerry Angelo will trade down, get four picks between the second and third rounds, and still manage to f*ck up a wet dream by only drafting reasonably well in the latter round. You are probably more right than you know. Luckily, Jerry Angelo is at least good at getting good bargains later on in the draft.
