    Marcus Cannon tests positive for lymphoma

    Source: Marcus Cannon tests positive for lymphoma
    Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 26, 2011, 12:30 PM EDT

    TCU offensive lineman Marcus Cannon has tested positive for a treatable form of lymphoma after a battery of tests, a league source tells PFT.

    The good news for Cannon is that this form of lymphoma is treatable. The timing of the news is unfortunate of course just days before the draft.

    A rumor was circulated last month that Cannon had testicular cancer, which wasn’t true. A biopsy was then performed to clear the matter up, with the results sent to all 32 teams.

    Unfortunately, the results of the biopsy showed that Cannon has lymphoma. Doctors had previously been aware of a benign mass that was present for years and is in his stomach/pelvic area.

    Doctors are recommending that Cannon will have to undergo chemotherapy, which could be potentially finished in 12 weeks. Even if Cannon has the most advanced stage of the disease, he could be finished with treatments in 24 weeks and the doctor said could “hopefully” continue with his football career at that time.

    We wish Cannon all the best at this difficult time as he readies to treat the disease.

    I know quite a few people have him on the Bears mock draft. That's why I posted this.

    I also wish Marcus the best of luck beating this disease.

    Crushing news for the kid just coming into the draft. It will be interesting to see what happens to him now. There may a real good chance that even with a full remission he may not be able to do much this year. I do wish him the best though. That's gotta be a crushing blow to him right now.

    You hate to hear about this and the guy was so close to his dream, but better to know and survive then to not know.

    The Bears can no longer take him in a high round, but I would still look at him later in the draft and one get a player that has a huge ceiling and 2 he gets the experience of being drafted.

    Docs say his treatment may take 24 weeks which means that it won't be until November that he'll even begin to workout and regain strength. Cannon won't be playing in 2011 period and unless he fully recovers from the disease and regains his football skills he may not ever return to the game at all. With this news in hand no team is likely to even draft him IMO and none of them care enough to waste a pick to give him "the experience of being drafted".

    I think that at best he'll be an undrafted FA and someone may sign him to a futures contract but it was me I'd just focus on getting well again and then call on teams who may have an interest. The lymphoma may be treatable but it's not necessarily cureable. He needs to worry about his life more than he need to worry about football right now. Faith be with him.

    I'm adding this for those interested enough to learn more about Lymphomas;

    That chance may never come. Even if he survives it he may never play again. This is serious stuff and even if he can play again it won't be for another couple of years or more. I don't think Pete Carroll or anyone else would spend even a 5th round pick on him Nick.

    oh jeeze...I misread..that sucks, but if there is a bright side, it's that if not for the thorough NFL physicals, it may not have been caught. I mean, if he weren't in the situation he's in being a potential top draft pick, it may have been diagnosed too late
