Dave Duerson findings to be released

BOSTON -- The Boston University center that studies brain injuries to professional athletes says it will release the findings on former NFL player Dave Duerson on Monday.
Duerson committed suicide at the age of 50 in February, shooting himself in the chest to preserve his brain for the study.

The brain was examined by the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at the B.U. School of Medicine.

A third-round pick by the Chicago Bears out of Notre Dame, Duerson was a starting safety on the 1985 team that won the Super Bowl. He went to four Pro Bowls from 1986 to1989 and another Super Bowl with the 1990 New York Giants.
But things began to unravel in his personal and professional life after that.

So sad to hear that. As thoughts and prayers are with his family. During this tragic time. Really so sad to hear! :(

I would personally love to see the findings come back conclusive in the way that he had a mental illness/malady brought on by all the hits he took to the head during his playing career. I'd love it if his family were then able to really stick it to the NFL.

How would they be able to stick it to the NFL? Please explain!

I didn't say they would. I said that I would love to see his family stick it to the NFL for not addressing the issue of concussions years ago.

What are they supposed to do about stopping concussions?

Perhaps requiring better padded helmets, enforcement of mandatory convalescence period(s) after a player is concussed, etc. Stuff that they are doing now but didn't do back then. Of course, you can't please everyone, just like I can't please you with this series of answers.

I am just asking, not trying to be a dick. But everything they are doing now, is still not preventing concussions. Besides, you go into this line of work, knowing that you are putting your body (and brain) on the line. No one who ever gets severely injured will ever have a leg to stand on (figurative or literal) in any lawsuit at claims the NFL is responsible for said injury.

The only way to prevent concussions is to turn the game into flag football.

That is true. But how many years was the NFL in denial of the whole issue when they could have taken steps to abate concussions as best as they could while also requiring that players sit out a game or two and be evaluated by both team and independent doctors? This issue is thankfully being addressed now, but it was certainly not being done in 1985, when Dave Duerson was playing.

Way back then, there was not enough medical research about concussions. They still called it getting your bell rung. Or its a really bad headache. The NFL can only work with the medical information they have. Until relatively recently, the medical field did not have a vast knowledge of this. If the medical field doesn't know too much, how could the NFL?
