I thought the whole "chocolate city" crack was supposed to be a statement of pride?
Apparently, the media ate it up, and there was a big outrage over it in the black community as well as for comments he made about the overflow of Mexican workers helping with the cleanup efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. From what I read, a British company who had associated itself with Nagin's business called Cox Communication said that he was a Republican who turned Democrat for the mayoral election in New Orleans since apparently one cannot get elected dog catcher in that city if he or she runs as a member of the G.O.P. He, of course, flatly denied, yet he supported Republican candidate Bobby Jindal for the Louisiana Gubernatorial Election, and reluctantly backed Senator John Kerry for the Presidential race in 2004. The guy is a big conundrum to say the least.
