Plaxico Burress and the Bears?
Plaxico Burress and the Bears

We're Black and Blue All Over:
The pending prison release of former NFL receiver Plaxico Burress will no doubt generate substantial speculation about where he might seek to play in 2011. Already, players on several teams have made public pitches. And I'm sure that in an NFC North context, we'll hear plenty of Chicago Bears speculation.
Will it be merited?
Here's all we know so far: Bears coach Lovie Smith has said he wouldn't mind acquiring a bigger receiver to join the trio of Johnny Knox, Earl Bennett and Devin Hester. Burress is 6-foot-5.
But would the Bears want the baggage Burress brings, not to mention the rust from two years of inactivity? Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune doesn't think so.
Pompei: "Burress has three things working against him. The first is he will be 34 when the season starts. The second is he has not played football, or even trained with a football team, for two full years. The third is he has a history of getting in trouble. I don't think the Bears are that desperate."
I tend to agree. We've spent plenty of time discussing receivers and the Bears, but I'm not sure Burress and the Bears will be a fit.

The only real positive I can think of regarding Burress is that he comes practically for free. If you could sign the guy to a one or two year deal for vet minimum or somewhere close to that and then bring him into camp to see what he's got to offer. Not much of a risk if you could do it that way.
If Malcom Floyd and Sidney Rice end up restricted that pretty much leaves Braylon Edwards as the only bigger WR with any kind of a history of production left on the table and he'll be a far more costly risk than Burress would be. I'm not saying he's the answer but if we can get a "free look" why not take it?
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Sounds like a 50s pop group. You have fun with that Plaxico.

yep think we can all agree "IF" have real F/A and a rice or flyod available, that will be the route we go.. BUT if do not have "normal f/a",, And comes down to a Edwards or Plexiglass... and we would have to risk $30 mill( 4-5 yars) on edwards OR,, a 1 yr 3-4 mill for burress.. can see the argument for plexiglass over edwards, based on the risk/reward...And i'm no fan of plexiglass, BUT can see the logic of picking him as the less of 2 evils

That's really what it comes down to if the others aren't to be had without it costing us draft choices and a large contract. If we want the problem solved and want to the minimum amount of risk involved with doing it we take a look at Plax because he's not in a position to look at much if anything in the way of guarantees. If he makes the club he gets his payday but gets cut if he can't hack it after his two year sabatical.

yep and has the Size that we are looking for to be the different WR we do not have- and unless a complete fool( which can't discount based on his history), we will be on best behaivor and a huge chip to prove his worth and really dedicate himself-- not sure if that will last long term, but short term ala Vick can see it

He's only gonna be a one or two year patch job until we can draft or sign someone else in FA. Hell, if the guy can give 50 catches and handful of tds he'd be worth it. Use him, Knox and Bennett in rotation at WR and move Hester to the slot where he belongs.

Upside is that it would be low-cost high-reward move. Another thing to consider is how much he stands to gain and lose with the way he handles not only his re-entry to the NFL, but society. He shows up as a model citizen and he stands to gain millions and Vick-esque press and opportunities off the field. He fucks up again and he's out in the blink of an eye in both situations, it's as simple as that.
