    Terrelle Pryor Bales on Buckeyes.............

Well the first of the stars from embattled OSU will enter the NFL supplemental draft. What teams will be interested and how high a pick will it take?

Terrelle Pryor, embattled Buckeye, calls it quits at Ohio State

    By Matt Hinton

Ohio State was already planning to take the field this September without quarterback Terrelle Pryor, thanks to a five-game suspension mandated by the NCAA, and began to brace for worse when the NCAA opened up an independent investigation last week into Pryor's noted affinity for dealer-owned vehicles. So at least they weren't blindsided this afternoon when the worst came: Pryor will skip his final year of eligibility this fall and move on to the NFL.

"In the best interest of my teammates, I have made the decision to forego (sic) my senior year of football at The Ohio State University," Pryor said in a statement through his attorney, Larry James, who also said he expected Pryor to enter the NFL's supplemental draft. Athletic director Gene Smith and interim head coach Luke Fickell also issued statements with the usual well wishes, and Smith said he hoped Pryor would return to OSU to complete his degree at some point in the future.

Pryor's exit comes just nine days after the departure of embattled head coach Jim Tressel, who was also facing at least a five-game suspension this fall, and their tarnished legacies in Columbus may never be untangled. Pryor was Tressel's most prized recruit, a top-ranked blue chip whose size and athleticism drew explicit comparisons to former Texas legend Vince Young. And even without hosannas from pro scouts or All-America teams, Pryor was on track to fulfill most of the hype going into his senior year: He was entrenched at the top of the depth chart barely a month into his true freshman season, was 31-5 as a starter without missing a game over the next three years and led the Buckeyes to at least a share of three straight Big Ten championships, all good for BCS bowl bids.

As a junior, he finished in the top 10 nationally in pass efficiency, led the Big Ten in touchdown passes and was the best player on an offense that easily averaged more points per game (38.8) than any other team in Tressel's decade-long tenure. He turned in the best performance of his career in a 26-17 win over Oregon that snapped the Buckeyes' three-game BCS losing streak in the 2010 Rose Bowl, and his second-best performance in a 31-26 Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas that snapped the Buckeyes' nine-game losing streak against the SEC. As a senior, the sky remained the limit.

But Pryor's very presence in the Sugar Bowl — along with three other starters found guilty of selling jerseys, championship rings and other memorabilia to a Columbus tattoo dealer who later found himself under federal scrutiny for drug trafficking — left a bad taste in the mouth of everyone involved, and foreshadowed their fall. Within months, Tressel had been outed for covering up knowledge of Pryor's violations months before the start of the 2010 season, the NCAA had formally charged Ohio State with major allegations and Tressel was preparing himself to fall on the sword. Pryor, the face of the program, was painted as arrogant, entitled and indifferent to boundaries. Even before today, it was apparent his college career was likely over once the NCAA was done looking into his steady succession of new vehicles.

Now, it's official: Ohio State can hand the reins to one of the four quarterbacks already vying to become Pryor's temporary stand-in, and Pryor can embark on the next phase of his career as a very promising but raw wide receiver or tight end prospect at the next level. If he does enter the supplemental draft, he'll be the most high profile player there in at least 20 years. But as a Buckeye, his legacy will always be one of what might have been.

He wasn't going to get to play this year regardless; it was his only real option. Wonder what team is dumb enough to take him in the suplemental.

To me Pryor looks like one of those guys who'll be a cancer for any team that takes him. Anybody who has that much of a sense of entitlement and zero regard for his team and teamates isn't gonna be very popular in an NFL lockeroom.

I think that's been mentioned as a possibility. Does he even have the tools to play QB at the NFL level? So many of these big mobile QB's dominate in college but they can't do it in the pros. I'm not saying they fail physically but emotionally some seem to have a hard time not being the "King of the Hill" anymore. It's a let down for them and Vince Young would be a good example of that.

From watching Ohio State, he seems to have the physical "tools", but too often not the mental tools, doesn't read a "D" very well, makes alot of questionable decsions, that in college work out more often, but will not in Pro's..and of course all his off field stuff, also doesn't say "leadership" which need in NFl at the Qb position- which is why think changing Position is smart- his athleticism does stand out on the field.. so a TE/W hybrid IMo would work- the big question is would he Put the time in to change? or even let his ego do it? and not sure

The latest I read made the suggestion that if wanted to play QB he should go to Canada for some seasoning and experience. He said that he didn't think he was ready for the NFL right now. We'll see if he files for the supplemental draft or not.

As a Buckeye fan (I follow both UT and Ohio State football and have for years), this all is very much an emotional thing for me. One of the things that worried during the John Cooper regime in which Cooper, a fellow alumnus of my Powell High School here in Powell, TN, recruited players who often ran a foul with the law or did not perform well in the classroom. He always had loaded teams in terms of talent - in fact, it is argued that the 1998 Ohio State team, whose only loss that season to Michigan State came as the #1 team in the nation, was far superior to Jim Tressel's 2002 National Championship team and his 2006 and 2008 teams that appeared in the BCS Championship Games. But Cooper recruited some shady characters and his teams had very low graduation rates.

When Jim Tressel came in, the very first thing he did was very declaratively make the promise he would beat Michigan. Well, he did, 26-21 in Ann Arbor. You all know his starting quarterback from the 2002 National Championship season - Craig Krenzel - but what you didn't know was that he was an outstanding young man and a great student, carrying a 3.8 GPA in Molecular Genetics. Tressel didn't recruit him, but he rode him to a National Title and two Fiesta Bowl victories. However, the first time that there was trouble on the horizon during the Tressel era was with Maurice Clarett, who received money and a vehicle from an Ohio State backer. Clarett was dealt with severely; he was kicked off the squad. Then a year later, Troy Smith, who would go on to win the Heisman Trophy, would accept benefits from a Ohio State backer. His penalty was that he would miss that year's Alamo Bowl, which Ohio State won anyway.

After those two things, nothing ever happened, and we fans just assumed that everything was being handled properly and that Tressel was a good disciplinarian. He didn't recruit players who got into legal trouble, and no one ever heard of any kind of legal troubles coming out of the Ohio State football team. A lot of people were considering Tressel to possibly be the greatest coach in the history of the program, a pretty lofty position when you consider that the great Woody Hayes coached to the point where it supplanted Michigan as the powerhouse of the Big Ten until he was old and the game passed him by (see: Hayes punches out Charlie Bauman of Clemson). Then this shit happens, and suddenly you realize that there is not one Goddam major athletic program in the United State, not Ohio State, not Tennessee (who is under NCAA investigation for violations in three sports: football, men's basketball, and baseball), not Alabama, not Oklahoma, not Auburn, not ANYWHERE. There are no clean programs in America, and the only reason why there haven't been more violations reported to the NCAA is because those that haven't been caught have gone about their business of cheating in a very surreptitious/clandestine manner and have managed to hide their messes.

My best friend (who got me into Ohio State football back in high school) and his dad often get onto me about liking pro football, and that players only play for the money, and, in the case of my friend's dad, makes claims after his beloved Cleveland Browns left Cleveland for Baltimore, that the owners will ultimately rip the hearts of their fan base out by picking up and moving their team out of town. My argument against what they say is that all football and basketball players, collegiate or pro, want to play for money, so why not like a version of a sport where it's legal to make money and that incentive to play hard is there whereas in college, you have the perpetuating incidents where school's athletic departments break the rules of not paying players or where players get to be "so good" that they leave college a year early (or, in the case of college basketball, the really talented players leave after only their freshman year)? No thanks. I love college sports, don't get me wrong, but the bullshit that the NCAA has thrown on the table has largely turned me off, and besides, the quality of play in college in comparison to the pros cannot compare.

    End of tangent.

Nah, but it did work for Warren Moon. That's who came to mind the minute the reporter suggested that he play in the Great White North for a few years before trying his hand in the NFL. I'd have to agree. He needs to get some maturity because if he comes into the NFL with the same attitude he had in college somebody will frag him.
