Fuzzy Thurston's Super Bowl II ring will be auctioned off

Former Packers star has major IRS debt Brad Biggs

Let Fuzzy Thurston’s story serve as a cautionary tale for Green Bay Packers players who receiver their Super Bowl XLV championship rings last week.

That’s because U.S. marshals have taken Thurston’s Super Bowl II ring and it will be auctioned off in August to help settle massive debt he has to the IRS.

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Thurston owes about $1.7 million in back taxes, much from the late 1970’s and 1980’s when he owned and operated a chain of restaurants and bars. Heritage Auctions will sell off the ring as the National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, Ill., on Aug. 4. Per the report, early estimates are the ring will sell for more than $20,000 – and the bidding could take off. A Super Bowl I ring belonging to Packers offensive lineman Steve Wright sold for $73,409 last month.

Thurston and the co-owners of the properties he held were accused of withholding taxes from the pay checks of employees and not turning the money over to the government. It’s obviously been a long battle.

Fuzzy and his partners had a chain of very successful clubs called "The Left Guard" throughout the Fox Valley and Fuzzy often appeared personally and hobbed nobbed with fans at his piano bar downtown. All of those places went TU in the 70's and the main one in GB became the Carlton West by the end of the decade. Fuzzy was a character though, funny as hell and bled green and gold. Sorry to hear about his IRS problems.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

just do not see that anymore with ex-players and fans anymore, the $$$ have moved the accessibility away, i'd say the 1980's bears probably the last of the name teams that had that kind of interaction with fans( almost all players had bars/resturaunts the years after won it).. And this shows why athelte's need to LEARN finance and take education courses if going to Put your name and own businesses, otherwise even if its your account's fault you are going to face the IRS.. mike Vick is going to be the next one to have this with pension problems in a few of his businesses before jail..
