Leslie Frazier: Good DB coach, assistant HC and now HC in Minny this year, inherits decent talent, so it will be interesting to see if the Vikes become competitive again this year or if they continue their downward slide.

Feel like im missing someone probably. In any case, ex-Bears players as Coaches are not always guaranteed. (i included Buddy Ryan to show even a great Bears coach doesnt necessarily make a great HC). Bears players as Bears coaches seems more of a fan service then anything. Great coaching is not something that is formulaic or can be assembled randomly. It usually involves great leadership, and extends into an actual system (46 from the Bears 85 for example, or Dungy and the Cover-2 he brought to Indy), and also involves proper GM experience to acquire the necessary pieces for that system. Look at Ditka...he had a great system that he got from Buddy Ryan, and they got picks for that system. Ditka moved on to Nawlins, where he was a disaster, Buddy Ryan moved on and also didnt fare as well. Singletary may make an excellent LB coach, but a HC?

As I recall, Singletary didn't do that badly. He had some bad luck with injuries to Frank Gore this past season, and to top that off, he had some serious issues at quarterback. He had the best young LB in the game in Patrick Willis. When Gore is healthy, the 49ers tend to fare better. I think it was as much to do with bad luck as anything else. I don't think anyone could have expected much to come from the situation, to be truthful with you, because outside of Gore and Willis, who did he really have?

Singletary was a great motivator, and I honestly feel like he got the best play he possibly could out of his players despite some of the disrespect that some of them showed him in the locker room and in the game. He dealt cards with a firm hand, and to that, there is no doubt. I think Benji could be right, and I think Jimmors could be right. Some coaches, like Wade Phillips for example, are horrible for team-wide strategy and should stick to coordinating only a portion of the team. Wade Phillips had all the talent in the world to make a run at a Super Bowl, and just botched it up royally. Under Jason Garrett, the team finished the season with a 5-3 mark, which, if we translate that out to "what could have been" earlier in the season, they could have finished with 10 win or so. However, that point is nebulous because we are getting into what can't possibly be known for sure. In any case, Wade Phillips was not cut out to be a head coach, and he has never been what I would call super successful anywhere he has ever coached, whether it be Denver, Buffalo, or Dallas.

Just Jim Harbaugh is all. He did a great job at Stanford but what he'll be able to do in the NFL remains to be seen. I believe that some great HC's become that way because they surround themseleves with great teaching assistants and they simply remain the overall team strategist. I think Belichek is a lot like that. Then you have Don Shula who was the absolute power of his kingdom. Like Bum Phillips once said, "he could take his'n and beat your'n or take your'n and beat his'n".

Lombardi was a lot like that too but he was more of an offensive guy than a defensive guy. For that he had Phil Bengston who did succeed him but had little success. It's the "Peter Principle" in action NFL style. Some guys who are tremendous co-ordinators and teachers just aren't cut out to be great total game strategists.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
