Plank has no expectations of rejoining Bears

Doug Plank, a hard-hitting safety for whom former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan named his famed "46" defense, has extensive professional coaching experience but doesn't foresee ever returning to his former team as an assistant.

“Every organization kind of looks at former players differently,” Plank said. “This is my own personal evaluation. I don’t know if former Chicago Bears coming back in a coaching capacity would really interest the organization. Or at least that’s the way it’s perceived. I would never expect (a Bears coaching opportunity) to happen.

"Mike Ditka was the last great player to come back and he just achieved all kind of success. I certainly don’t have any bad feelings whatsoever for the Chicago Bears. I respect that organization to the max. But it looks like the direction my life is taking over the course of the last few years … for me making a guess on a coaching position, I would probably be guessing more toward the college ranks than the NFL.”

Plank now works for the Chicago-based National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA).

“I have been coaching the last 10 years in the Arena League and in college. And last year with Ohio State, and before that with the Falcons and the Jets,” Plank said. “Still, this is an aspect of coaching. I don’t think I’m done yet. Something else I will be securing probably in the near future."

Plank and fellow Bears safety Gary Fencik were dubbed "The Hit Men."

“Being with that (Bears) franchise and on that team changed my life. I am still able to reap the benefits having been associated with the organization," Plank said. "And I am still looking forward to trying to help as many people as I can through coaching and football. That seems to be where most of my life’s work has centered around. But I can’t tell you exactly where that is going to take me. I have a feeling and trust that it is going to take me somewhere. "

Really don't understand that mindset at all. Is Lovie afraid of an 85 Bear as a coach, and if so, because they might prove more popular than him? Or is it that they're not his cronies?

I'd say afraid. He doesn't want to be surrounded by the ghosts or legends of the past.

Personally, I'd love to see Plank here as DC or maybe even HC someday

Hells yeah. Isn't Mongo a coach on a smaller scale too? I'd love to see him in the Bears coaching staff.

The 46 coaching tree certainly bears fruit. Plank should certainly be in the conversation. Lovie can hire whomever he wishes and not hiring former players predates him. Never understood what management or ownerships hangup on it was. And I'm talking qualified candidates not just raw hires.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Perhaps he does not want to work with an inferrior HC.

He might not be great, but if he wins the Super Bowl, will you still be calling him inferior? This is not meant to be a flame question.

    Well lets roll the tape:

Buddy Ryan: Great DC, not-so-great HC
Singletary: LB Coach then Head Coach, HC didnt go so well
Rivera: Good DC, just got his HC gig in Carolina, but Carolina is in shambles, so it will be some time to see if he helps, hurts, or makes no difference
Leslie Frazier: Good DB coach, assistant HC and now HC in Minny this year, inherits decent talent, so it will be interesting to see if the Vikes become competitive again this year or if they continue their downward slide.

Feel like im missing someone probably. In any case, ex-Bears players as Coaches are not always guaranteed. (i included Buddy Ryan to show even a great Bears coach doesnt necessarily make a great HC). Bears players as Bears coaches seems more of a fan service then anything. Great coaching is not something that is formulaic or can be assembled randomly. It usually involves great leadership, and extends into an actual system (46 from the Bears 85 for example, or Dungy and the Cover-2 he brought to Indy), and also involves proper GM experience to acquire the necessary pieces for that system. Look at Ditka...he had a great system that he got from Buddy Ryan, and they got picks for that system. Ditka moved on to Nawlins, where he was a disaster, Buddy Ryan moved on and also didnt fare as well. Singletary may make an excellent LB coach, but a HC?
