Stuntmen can ragdoll, certain MMA guys can ukemi (breakfall). There are many worse hits, impacts, suplexes, stunts, and assaults that cause zero injury because guys were trained to have kinesthetic awareness when things go FUBAR. NFL might wanna look into that part.

Soul, you don't need to hit a guy full speed when he is in mid air during a preseason game. The WR never saw if comming yet he got blasted on the side line. It is those kind of hits that can end a guys career. In hockey the NHL is trying to do something about head injuries. Too many guys have been carted off the ice in the last couple of years.

    1. then don't play the game.

    2. for the younger guys, the pre-season is really the only time they have to go full speed and show what they got.

no coach is going to look at a rookie/UFA half assing it cause "it's just the preseason" and say "I want that guy on my team"...
the guys that make it are the guys who go out and make perfectly legal killshots/snotbubblers/dream makers....

it was a clean hit leading with the shoulder
for those who can't follow the link/missed it.

The commentator had it right... aim lower or go for the ball. Yeah it sorta looked like he was leading with his shoulder but instead he clocked him with his helmet. NFL needs to send out memo's on how to properly tackle someone these days. Can end up paralyzing some with hits like that.

Grizz the guy had no chance on protecting himself and that is what I believe the NFL is trying to do to protect vulnerable players. You and I are not playing the game but the safety could have easily tacked the guy instead he lowered his shoulder and drilled the wr high. It is those kind of hits that can hurt a guy real bad. If the wr could have had a second to brace for the hit then I would not have a problem with the shoulder hit but he didn't and he had zero chance of protecting himself.

A short explanation of the "defenseless receiver rule" from referee extraordinaire, Jerry Markbreit:

In the closing minutes of the Cardinals-Ravens game, Adrian Wilson was called for a personal foul when he delivered a hard hit to Ravens tight end Todd Heap. In explaining the foul, the referee made mention of Heap being a "defenseless receiver". Can you explain this "defenseless receiver" rule? -- Matt, Freehold, N.J.

All players in virtually defenseless postures are protected from unnecessary hits by the defense, which include helmet-to-helmet contact, helmet-to-body contact, and blows to the head. Intended receivers of forward passes who fail to catch the pass are considered to be in a defenseless position immediately after the pass is missed. If the pass is caught, all of these restrictions are off, unless in the opinion of the covering official, something unsportsmanlike occurs. In your play, the pass was missed by the tight end and he was unnecessarily hit by the defender. The announcement by the referee was excellent. The microphone is used to explain situations so that the public can understand what happened and why.

Meh... I still love wathing guys get blown up like that. I started watching football for that more than TD's and big runs. Against the rules or not, I think hits like that should be fair game. there's NO WAY for the safety to determine if the ball was "caught" or not in the nano seconds before the shot. I'd agree that maybe he should have brought his head down or something, but that "defenseless reciever" thing is Crap IMO.

Not disagreeing about Goodell SFB.. haha... but your post brought on a somewhat related thought about the topic:

In general, outside of a youtube highlight reel, the rugby guys aren't taking the headshots that NFLers take on a regular basis. Also notice how much better form the rugby players have when tackling. The NFL plays much faster in the secondary and the tackling is horrid.... it's more like people leaving their feet and acting like missiles. Entertaining or not, I think the missile part is what the NFL is trying to get away from.

I'm not disagreeing or agreeing with what's going on in the NFL. I'll just say that I think all of the players know the risks they take when they play the game. If you want to reduce head injuries, fair enough. I really think the over-protection of the QB is misguided. That initiative is about money, if you ask me. They're trying to prevent injury to these high dollar commodities. You don't see nearly as many QBs with the long term health problems that other players at other positions have had.
