Bill Belichick wants the extra point to die
Bill Belichick wants the extra point to die
By MJD
This is my favorite thing to come out of the conversation about the new kickoff rules. Bill Belichick used a kickoff question to move the conversation toward the extra point, and argued that it should be eliminated from the game, or at least greatly modified.
"Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn't be in the game. I don't think it is good for the game. Extra points, when the odds are 99 percent range in extra points it is not a play. Let's move the ball back to the 15-20 yard line and not make it a tap in. Let them kick it. Same thing with the kickoff return, if you're just going to put the ball on the 20, put the ball on the 20."
(Applause.)
Given my druthers, I'd eliminate it completely -- I don't think you'd see a lot of kicks missed from the 15 or 20, either. It saves time, it speeds the game along, and the guy in the end-zone seats with the John 3:16 sign doesn't get time to prepare for his close-up.
This is the MJD plan: Let's just make touchdowns worth seven, and if someone wants to risk a point either way, they'll have the option to trot the ball out to the 2-point conversion spot, and they'll get eight points for their touchdown if they convert, six if they don't. Hell, I say we move that back, too. I think the 6-yard-line sounds about right.
I'm with him on the kickoff, too. I'll talk more about this later, but Belichick is right. If what the NFL wants is more touchbacks, then why go halfway? Put the ball on the 20. Put it on the 25 or 30 if you want to. I'm not saying I'm anti-kickoff, I'm just saying that if the league just wants drives to start at the 20, there are ways to do that that are more efficient.
Hmm. This Belichick character. I think he might be a smart one.

Maybe we should move all extra point FGs to the 35 yd line as well. Now wouldn't that be interesting.

Let just make each run worth 7 points, and the extra basket worth 3. If you can collect a side while still on the pitch, let's make it 6.

As much as I hate to say it he makes at good point inasmuch as the XP is concerned. Now that they've decided to even further slow up the game by reviewing every scoring play let's just make the the TD worth 7 points and leave it at that. Then the players don't have to spend another couple of minutes standing around waiting to get the play off. Give teams the option of going for two as he says and if they waive that opportunity just get everyone ready for the kickoff.

Or just make everyone "go for one" by running/passing. I'd prefer to see that.

Didn't the Pats miss an extra point attempt against the Bears last year? Is it possible that Coach Belicheat.. oops I mean Belichick is biased as a result? Or maybe he just doesn't want to have to invest as much in kickers/holders....
The point I'm trying to make is that the extra point attempt has been missed. Sometimes this has had a major effect on the game. In addition, if there is no extra point attempt, then there can be no fake extra point, go for 2pt conversion either. On the surface, getting rid of the point after attempt sounds good. It saves time and streamlines the game. Looking a little deeper though, it also means less focus on special teams and less opportunity for teams to successfully complete 2pt conversions. The idea being that if a team keeps its offense on the field, then the other team KNOWS that a 2pt attempt is coming.
As an aside, I have yet to see a TD in preseason that has needed the 30+seconds of review the officials are taking. I suspect (but cannot prove) that the officials are just a hair unhappy about having some of their authority usurped and are choosing to "silently" protest. (pure opinion there)
Of course, I'm of the opinion that a coach should be able to throw a challenge against a flag as well.

Yeah, i dont agree with completely eliminating the PAT, but they could move it back 5 or 10 yards to make it more interesting and slightly less "automatic." And theres nothign wrong with the game length...its around or slightly over 3 hours, which is fine. Hell, waiting for the "official replay" is half the fun...they invented a mini-guessing game, "will they or wont they (overturn it)?"
I do agree about the new kickoff rules though..if they want to put it on the 20, then just put the damn ball on the 20, why waste a kickoff. If youre gonna have kickoffs, do what youve been doing for years. But then again, if the new kickoff rules are permanent, then i guess Hester's status as all time greatest return man is never gonna be eclipsed.

Yeah, I'd say either elminate the XP all together, especially if they're gonna review every scoring play. All you have is 22 guys standing around for another minute or more. If they do insist on keeping it spot the ball on the 8 yard line and make it a 25 yard kick. Those can be missed. Then add the option of taking the ball on the 3 yard line for a two point attempt. Much more interesting set of choices if they did it that way. Far less certainty in either choice and it forces coaches to plan ahead more.
