Thread: Rex Grossman's performance vs Giants

I don't root for teams or players to fail. It just isn't who I am. I'm hopeful that Grossman can make good on his career in Washington. I'm optimistic that he can be a solid game manager for Shanahan.

Grossman has two gifts; fantastic quick release and one of the prettiest deep passes in football.

He's incapable of feeling pressure on the field and can't get away from it in the locker room.

He's also shows limited anticipation and cannot rapidly seeing the field.

His 'legacy' for the first few years of his pro career was his durability. That, to me, was the most unfair assessment of Grossman. It's true he spent his early years injured, but it's equally true those injuries were unique, almost freakish.

Once he was back on the field (and upright), he showed flashes of greatness. The whole 2006 (Good Rex/Bad Rex) was as frustrating a season as I can remember.

I think the guy has been overcompensating his whole professional career. He seemed to treat every start as if it were his last and played almost in a panic at times. I think he's still carrying a bit of that. No one's ever invested a suitable amount of confidence in the guy. And why would they?

Maybe if he has a huge season, Shanahan will be that guy. Having Beck behind him doesn't help.

The one team I thought was the perfect fit for Grossman was The Raiders.

I say all this, being a Grossman fan. I have the jersey.

Nice tribute to Grossman mats. I think everything you point out about him is true. Physically Rex has good to great skills but it's his head that gets him in trouble 90% of the time. The other 10% comes from his tendency to put the ball on the ground.

Playing for Mike Shanahan will be a good experience for him. Shanny is a great offensive strategist so Rex has that going for him. Ron Turner never did right by him in Chicago. Beck is also a good QB and hopefully having that push from behind just like he did from Orton and/or Griese when he was with the Bears will help.

I was never a Rex hater and always thought he had better skills than Kyle Orton. He just needed to do a better job of maintaining his cool and keeping his head in the game. I hope he has a great career in Washington.

I hope Rex does well because his name rhymes with something I love.

From the Skins fans I know they are talking either about how long he will last before he gets hurt or how long he will last before Shanny pulls bad Rex. Either way thats not a great vote of confidence.

Glad to know I'm not the only one...

I agree with everything in your post. He has no pocket presence, but he does have a helluva arm...which is strange because he has small hands (one of the reasons for his inability to hold onto the ball). And yeah, beautiful deep ball.

Rex doesn't lack for confidence AT ALL (ever hear how he ended up at UF?), but he's not the sharpest guy either...that's just Rex though. Hopefully the situation with Shanahan in Washington, along with the seasoning he's had now, is the perfect marriage because I really want to see him succeed too.

Living in VA all I tell the Skins homers around here is that I've seen this Rex before, NFC Offensive player of the month for September of 2006, destroyed the 9ers by halftime. And then we played the Cardinals.

I wish him well as was said but living in this area I'm kind of waiting for my I told you so's.

I was thinking last night how funny it is that Orton, Grossman, and Cutler are all starters in the NFL. Chicago is like a QB factory
