Packer LB Fined For Hit On Cutler................

Packer fined $15,000 for hit on Cutler

By Brad Biggs, Tribune Reporter 8:59 a.m. CDT, September 30, 2011

Green Bay Packers linebacker Erik Walden has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for a shot to the head of Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

Walden was fined by the league, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, for a hit he made in the fourth quarter that resulted in a roughing the passer penalty. Walden hit Cutler high on the play while fellow linebacker Clay Matthews was tackle Cutler low. The penalty wiped out an interception by cornerback Tramon Williams in the fourth quarter as the Bears trailed 27-17.

“I didn’t lead with my head, I didn’t lunge,” Walden said, according to the report. “Clay was at the bottom, so I tilted to give (Cutler) a little hit with my shoulder. I was jumping over him but I didn’t land on him or send him to the ground, and I didn’t lead with my head. And I didn’t launch myself into him, so I don’t know.”

Walden has the right to appeal the fine.

Although I prefer the old days when you could level a QB and intimidate him into complete ineffectiveness I guess I can see why the league has to protect these multi million dollar assets. It's just that week after week there's a player being fined who I think honestly believes that he made a clean tackle. I remember this sack but I thought it came for a late hit and not helmet to helmet contact.

The entire 85 Bears defense would most likely have gotten a fine sometime during tha season with Wilbur Marshall leading the pack for that hit he put on Eric Hipple. That one would probably have cost him his entire salary for the season plus his pension and a warning that anymore hits like that and he'd be hung by the neck until dead, LOL.

I hate all the new tackling rules, and flags and fines.... its killing the game.

But I can see why they are doing what they are doing. They are trying to protect the investments to keep players from everything that is coming out about the players of yesteryear who are suffering from long lasting injuries.

The game we love is changing... maybe for the better, maybe not.

With the current rules surrounding the cap yeah, they do have to protect the high $$$ players which is why we get those involving hit's to the QB and defenseless receivers. The intimidation factor is gone now.

The NFL also stands for the NO FUN LEAGUE! As much as you don't want people to get injured or hurt, that could possibly end their career. You watch the game for the hits and for stuff like that.

I think most of these rule changes have more to do with the salary cap than they do about protecting players. If you lose a high cap guy to injury there's no cap relief and you still have to go out and bring in a replacement in some cases. That causes another cap hit. Maybe there should be something that gives a team some cap relief for a guy who goes on IR for the season. The player still gets paid but the team doesn't have to count 100% of it against the cap. It's a thought.
