San Diego Chargers Bolts not likely to franchise Jackson

NFL.com news: Report: Chargers likely won't give WR Jackson franchise tag

Report: Chargers likely won't give WR Jackson franchise tag

The San Diego Chargers are not likely to give wide receiver Vincent Jackson the franchise tag if they are unable to sign him, according to the U-T San Diego.
Jackson, 28, had the franchise tag placed on him by the Chargers last offseason, resulting in a one-year contract worth around $11 million. If the team decides to place the franchise tag on Jackson for the 2012 season, it would cost around $13 million. Sources told the newspaper that the team probably would not devote that much money to a single receiver for a one-year deal.
The newspaper reported that the Chargers will likely begin negotiating with Jackson in February. If they do not place the franchise tag on him, Jackson will become a free agent.
In his seventh season in the league, Jackson caught 60 passes for 1,106 yards and nine touchdowns. A year after missing significant time due to a contract dispute, Jackson played and started in all 16 games.

I'd like to see us pursue him but will he be too expensive if we need other FA (LT, CB etc) ?

Since Jackson is getting old and has some character issues I would like Chicago to sign either Mike Wallace or Dwayne Bowe.

If the Steelers are stupid enough to cut him to make the salary cap, we gotta snatch him up. KC only has 3 weapons, and Bowe is one of 'em...

I don't see Jackson as being old at age 28. Considering that he missed most of one season of his career it's more like he's a six year vet and he still has 3 or 4 more years at his peak. That's plenty of time to draft a guy who should be coming into his prime as Jackson is leaving his.

We have to look at these next three years as being our best window to get back to and win a Super Bowl and not be afraid to spend top dollar on dominant free agents at their positions like Peppers is. The amount JA has wasted on guys like Manu, Taylor, RWill, Meriweather, etc. could easily have bought us a top WR but he kept resisting that claiming who we had was good enough. That's why he's no longer GM.

If Jackson reaches FA we should make an honest run at him or someone else at his level. Drafting a WR in the first round doesn't solve our current problem since it will take at least another two or three years for him to peak. We need both a FA and a highly drafted (first three rounds) WR this offseason.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
