I'm old school I guess. I prefer to do my social networking in person where I can see, feel and touch a person. Where my meaning or intent can't be misconstrued because I can use vocal inflection and I don't have to include a smilie.
Those who wish to use it will. I was just saying that it's things like this that create a strong dislike for it in my world.
Exactly. Social media sites are the biggest waste of space on the internet. Nothing but people posting useless shit that no one else cares about. That's the problem with people today. They apparently have some need to make EVERYTHING public. There is no longer private. And for how little common sense there is in real life, it disappears entirely on Facebook, Twitter, etc. There's nothing you can do on one of these sites that makes them worth their very existance. All they do is promote malware propagation and cause people to waste time at work.

boards like this are nothing different... Everything you say and think is public. This is no longer private bar talk.
Overall, Boards are like social media only for 1 specific topic. Here it is daBears somewhere else its Footballs Future.

if you don't like Twitter, stay away (I do stay away)
if you don't like Facebook, stay away
If you don't want to have everything you say being public, just go to the settings and change it.

Who the fvck wants to read shit like that even if it was only about yourself. I guess things are a little more civil in Japan, huh?
It is easy. ... still with me?
It's easy for any ass clown to log into his Twitter account or any type of internet forum, and spout garbage.
I never said I didn't think there wasn't someone crazy enough to make good. But something tells me someone hell-bent on ruining this dude isn't going to spend time trying to figure out how to compose his feelings in 140 characters or less.

Should i be the one to point out that you typed that on the internet, and posted it on an online forum where fellow Bears fans "socialize?"

Oh...i can think of a few bigger wastes of spaces on the internet...
But, i digress. Yes, there is plenty of pointless crap on them. But, there are also plenty of other pertinent information to be found as well. For starters...it was key in the protests in Egypt and Libya and other middle eastern countries. That in itself is pretty important reason to have it around. But thats grand scale...on a smaller scale, it also can keep you in touch with people you havent seen since high school or college. It also can give you updates on important things your friends and family are doing, such as weddings, births, etc. Yes, i know...you can do all that with a telephone. Its much easier on social networks though.

I do that but every year it gets all the weirder. Like me for instance-do you know how much "pressure" it is not having a cell? It's funny really but since "everybody" has one they think your a kook add not having social media and they think you live in a cabin.
I can honestly say that there has been a social conditioning to accept Google able to track, find, and take pix of you, your house, GPS info etc. To put on FB and Twitter everything and anything is constantly encouraged. To have any sort of personal awareness of privacy is now lobotomized. "Why what are you trying to hide?" is the catchphrase I hear a lot of.
Had this sort of tech existed in earlier eras I don't even think it sees the light of day.

Actually, there is a perfectly reasonable cop-out to use for anyone that questions why you dont have facebook or twitter, etc: tell them "i used to, but im too concerned about the privacy issues and what they do with my personal data, so i got rid out of it to be safe"

This 100%. It doesn't see the light of day because people actually gave a shit about their personal data and privacy. Now your personal info is strewn everywhere and is quite easy to find for anyone looking to take advantage of it. Whether they have a pledge to "not share your information" or not, it still gets shared because 99% of the time it's all stored in one place so all it takes is one person to hack into it and it's out there for the world to see. Hell, even Facebook's creator couldn't keep his own shit safe, why would anyone touch that site with a 10 foot pole?
I do IT work for the government and I see this crap on a daily basis. People get pissy when they can't go on Facebook to take care of their e-farms! Oh the horror! The scariest thing is reading about all these kids coming out of college that will flat out refuse a job offer simply because they won't be allowed to use social media while at work.
Although on the plus side, it has made our probation officer's lives much easier. Now all they have to do is go to their Facebook page and look at all the pictures of you drinking to see that you've violated the terms of your probation.

Dont forget about that one case where the guy took pics of his kid, that he bound with duct tape, and then proceeded to post the pics on FB. Yeah...easier to weed out the child abusers too.
The privacy issue...i think its kind of like that creepy van parked in front of a middle school...people are ware of it, and they know its not gonna end up well...but they arent going to do anything about it until its too late. People are concerned about their privacy, but until it actually affects their lives somehow, they wont demand change.
Speaking of which....there are two current bills that are going to destroy our privacy online: ACTA and HR 1981. Yet most people dont even know about them. Hell, it took a damn site blackout to get people aware of SOPA.

The list of things coming goes on and on:
"Few people have ever heard about CIQ. Running under the app functions, CIQ doesn't require the user’s consent (or knowledge) to operate. On Android phones, it can track a user’s keystrokes, record telephone calls, store text messages, track location and more. Most troubling, it is difficult to impossible to disable."

Not a goad mats just a question phrased almost as a statement. I do believe that things are different in Japan. It's a very different culture than ours and I doubt the Japanese make threats against some baseball player who struck out in the bottom of the ninth with the game on the line or another who decides to leave Japan for the glamor and the big paychecks from American MLB.
I'm not out to taunt you but in your first post you want to take me to task for my personal opinion about social networking sites. It's my opinion for cripes sake and the title of this thread makes that very clear when I indicate my dislike for it, no one else's. It's also not wrong because it's merely an opinion and I'm entitled to it without you making light of it because it's "only the internet".
I have no problem with you minimizing the importance of it in your world but I won't minimize in mine. You don't get to vote on that.
