Every snake isn't poisonous even if it is a snake. So I do make a distinction between here and a site like Facebook or Twitter.
I realize there are forums in this site that function more like a Facebook or Twitter to deal with our personal lives and opinions on things which aren't football related. I think you'll see that I seldom if ever go there anymore. If all of you will just take the time to read the f'n title you'd see that it was Twitter that I said I disliked. I didn't say that I disliked all forms interaction on the internet. In fact a email daily both for business and personal reasons. I singled out one form of internet communication that I dislike and nowhere did I indicate that anyone else should feel as I do.
The title clearly states that what happened on Twitter ie; threats to Kyle Williams as a result of his mistakes, was something caused me to dislike Twitter. I neither said nor implied more than that so let's not start stretching this to cover all forms of social interface on the internet OK? I never said that.
Oh...i can think of a few
bigger wastes of spaces on the internet...
But, i digress. Yes, there is plenty of pointless crap on them. But, there are also plenty of other pertinent information to be found as well. For starters...it was key in the protests in Egypt and Libya and other middle eastern countries. That in itself is pretty important reason to have it around. But thats grand scale...on a smaller scale, it also can keep you in touch with people you havent seen since high school or college. It also can give you updates on important things your friends and family are doing, such as weddings, births, etc. Yes, i know...you can do all that with a telephone. Its much easier on social networks though.
I was keeping in touch with my family through written correspondence and over the telephone long before Al Gore (LMAO!) invented the internet and I still do so. I also email and text frequently. You believe that it's easier to use social networks for that but I don't. As my post that you quoted said, I'm old school and what I do has worked for me for all forty plus years of my life from adolescence through adulthood. I don't feel the need for a change but for those who do that's why we live in a world that gives us choices.
To me Facebook and Twitter are not communication mediums I need so I don't have a Facebook account and don't plan to nor am I registered on Twitter. The only tweets I get are from the birds who camp out in the trees next to my bedroom window. I'm not asking or telling anyone else how they should feel about it just how I feel.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Of course people have been able to socialize without the internet, we've been doing it for thousands of years. My point about it being easier still stands though. Lets say you have an important event in your life you want to share with friends and family: an engagement, a baby, etc. Whats the quickest way to share it with the most people? Telephone? You'd have to call up people individually and spread the news. Letter? Even slower. Whereas on FB, all you have to do is make a single post, and everyone thats on your FB will know of it when they check their FB. Much quicker, and easier then phone or letters.
That is the appeal of social networking: ease of communication and sharing. Unfortunately, (just like in other forms of socializing) people need to learn the difference between WHATS worth sharing, and what is simply pointless, inane drivel that the rest of us could give two shits about.

I would agree with you on both of these counts. Especially the second. But as you say many have not yet learned the distinction between interesting news and "I could give a shit" drivel so quite a bit of Facebook is packed with the latter.
In the first instance the only problem I see is there may be people on your Facebook that you don't care to share certain news with. I suppose in that case you could make that known more privately but in my life that's not a needless complication. All I have is a father, four daughters and two sisters to inform of my comings and goings. I'm not thinking of marrying again anytime soon when leasing a sexual partner is so much cheaper than buying one (learned that lesson the hard way, twice) and the only bundles of joy I'm expecting would be my daughters children, not mine.
I'm a friggin' anachronism Jimmors. I still belong in the last century because I haven't caught up with this one yet and probably never will.

Don't worry about catching up Soul. Technology goes so fast you just wait to catch the next one like a bus. Many folks are now starting to sour on social media. Sometimes you can be ahead by being behind.

There's nothing to catch up to. All you're missing out on is people posting about how they're taking a dump or eating a sandwich. I'm more than fine with letting that pass me by.

Well, since we are on the subject...Google+, thats the google version of Facebook, the new social networking site on the block, has an interesting twist that solves that problem you mentioned. They allow you to group your friends or family into "circles" (opposed to FB's one giant list), and when you share information you can pick which circles you want to share it with. So if you have your family in one circle, and you have news you ONLY want to share with your family (and not your friends or co-workers for instance), then you can do that.
Oh, and this also occurred to me today as well....while i was reading that "im new here to dbs" thread i believe yttocs was curious as to how some of us come up with Bears news so quickly. And it occurred to me...some of us are following certain Bears/NFL/Sports journalists on twitter, and we get info much sooner then most of us normally would. Granted, 99% of the sports twitters out there are pretty dumb, but not only do they keep a direct link to our favorite sports stars (remember that the whole Cutler-Marshall exchange happened over twitter), it also brings us news more quickly then ever.
And no, im not trying to "convert" anyone to anything, im just simply providing an opposing viewpoint about how social media CAN be beneficial.

At least Google has the right idea. Compartmentalizing your news makes sense. There are things the immediate world doesn't need to know about. I do recognize that some of our Bears news comes from tweets but I often wonder if it's more rumor that hasn't been verified than fact. Initial reactions and that sort of thing.
I guess there are things it can be used for beneficially but when I see people communicating death threats I have to wonder if there shouldn't be a limit on how it's being used and if common sense or laws are violated privileges are terminated. Like I said it's not for me and it's hard to accept the fact that some Harvard weenie made himself a multi-billionaire with this. If it's this easy I need to come up with the next "pet rock".

Well yes, they are intitial reactions, but respected sports journalists are pretty good about being accurate and quick in their reporting. Lol, just another recent example: WindyCity's thread about Emery firing ruskell...came from a Zach Zaidman tweet.

Well, thats what the law is for. If you make a death threat, even online...if the police take it seriously, you WILL have to pay the consequences. But our free speech is also paramount. A news story i saw earlier today, 2 Brits were detained for over 5 hours by DHS for tweeting that they were going to "Destroy America" on a visit here. Scary stuff...except for the fact that i guess in Brit lingo to "destroy" something means to party it up and have a blast. Banning speech is never the correct answer, but reacting properly to dangerous speech is.

FB allows the same thing. You can plop your friends into different lists, and customize those lists to only show the information you like. You can also restrict those different lists from seeing posts by other lists. Like G+, you can also restrict the list for any individual post.
For instance... my "family" list doesn't ever see anything from a couple of my other lists, and my "work" list doesn't see anything posted from my "friends" list. Easy-peezy.
