Exactly, what was once the bar talk of angry drunks has become a public free for all forum. These people are pretty brave with a mouse and a keyboard at their disposal but they'd be screaming to the cops to do something about it if was them getting the threatening messages.
Let's just hope they never develop a micro chip that can fire a gun.

It's the internet, ferchrissakes!
"He received death threats on twitter!"
Better than receiving them in person.

Easy to say when it isn't you or your family on the receiving end mats. You think there isn't anyone crazy enough to either make good on a threat like that or get revved up by what someone else posts? Bar talk between a couple of crazy's is a little different than a few thousand crazy's or at least it would be to me.
Who the fvck wants to read shit like that even if it was only about yourself. I guess things are a little more civil in Japan, huh?

Lets be realistic here....people, athletes and celebs have received death threats for alot longer than the internet has been around. The only difference now, is that things like Twitter simply make it EASIER to do so, and that we KNOW about it much sooner, instantly even.
Is it serious? Of course it is. It shouldnt be taken lightly in any case, but we cant act like its something new, something that only started to happen in the past decade, or that it needed something like Twitter to be done. And just like before, when people did it via mail or telephone...the police should investigate any death threats and make arrests if necessary.

what is new is the access we have to information about these people that we didn't use to. You can google exactly where this guy lives and what his house looks like w/just a little research. You can find out where his kids goto school w/little to no effort.

Yet another reason in an ever growing list that social media needs to die in a fire.

1st amendment disagrees. Besides, social media is mostly benign..hundreds of millions of people use it every single day without incidents such as this, so getting rid of it over the actions of a few disturbed individuals is ridiculous.

I think death threats like that should be taken seriously. That said people in the spotlight should take far greater care online-you don't need to Twitter and FB update all the time. Sometimes less is more for fans interested in your pro-career.
As for other things like cyber bullying- I wish I was only cyber-bullied back in the day as opposed to the real McCoy. It's as if people now wince and fall to pieces from words. God forbid old man reality puts you in a actual physical situation.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

It's not gonna go away we all know that, at least not until something bad really happens and maybe even not then. Maybe I'm from a simpler time but how is it we got along without Twitter and/or Facebook for the first twenty odd years or so of the internet? Something wrong with email or online chats?
I'm old school I guess. I prefer to do my social networking in person where I can see, feel and touch a person. Where my meaning or intent can't be misconstrued because I can use vocal inflection and I don't have to include a smilie.
Those who wish to use it will. I was just saying that it's things like this that create a strong dislike for it in my world.
