In one of the oddest emails I have ever opened from an NFL team, the Indianapolis Colts have basically issued a joint statement from owner Jim Irsay and quarterback Peyton Manning in an attempt to quell the spat that has garnered enough media attention to overshadow both the hiring of Chuck Pagano and preparation for the Super Bowl.

Here is what the statement says verbatim:

"We would like to dispel any misperception that there might be any hard feelings between us. Since 1998, we have enjoyed a great relationship, based upon mutual respect and trust. We have always been able to talk and address matters we’ve faced over the years, not just as owner and player, but as friends. We had a long talk today and we want to assure Colts fans everywhere that we are both committed to maintaining our close relationship and to working together through any challenges the future may bring."

And there you have it. All is well in Indianapolis. Nothing to see here ... until March 8 when Manning is likely released rather than the Colts paying him $28 million.

The Big Apple ain't big enough for the likes of two Mannings on Broadway. Especially since they'll be sharing the same stadium.

The latest from Manning says he has no intention of retiring and that his rehab is going well. In another month Irsay is gonna have one hell of decision to make. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Maybe we can sign Peyton Manning to be the backup QB for the Bears!

Seriously, all kidding aside, I have to believe that Jim Irsay is going to experience some serious backlash out of the fans of the Indianapolis Colts if he goes through with cutting ties with Manning. I know for a fact that down here in Tennessee, there are seriously a lot more Colts fans than there are the Titans strictly because of Manning's connections with the University of Tennessee football program. The Colts are going to lose a major fan stronghold in the state of Tennessee if he severs ties with Peyton Manning. Fans down here consider Manning like a god, and will literally follow him to wherever he winds up, whether it's the Jets or the 49ers.

There will be a huge backlash (pretty much the same as there would have been had we cut Favre instead of letting him "retire" the first time), but in the end the Colts will be better off letting him walk. They can use the ungodly amounts of money they're paying him to bring in some depth (which after seeing how this season played out is sorely lacking) so that when their starting QB does go down they don't turn into a peewee football team. Outside of Manning, that team has very few redeeming qualities. A few seasons of high draft picks should help to alleviate that.

I agree, but at the sametime, I'm not saying that Peyton Manning was wrong to command the contract that he got based on his career's performance. The Colts have a lot of decisions to make. They will instantly improve if Peyton returns simply because 100% of their offense returns to the threshold. But, by the same token, if they got rid of him, and drafted Luck with the first overall pick, I think I can see improving just as much or even more based on the depth that you mentioned. We have all known for years that without Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts simply could not compete at a high level. I think we all remember in the 2006 AFC Championship Game when Manning broke his finger nail off how he was talking to Jim Sorgi about replacing him and trying to prepare him for what appeared to be an impossible task. It was the same way way back then, only everyone on their roster was old. Now, the same players for the part are still there, but they are old and their skills are diminishing. Perhaps it is time for, as you said, a full and complete rebuild that will be painful to watch, but will prove fruitful in the end.

I don't think the condition of Manning's neck is such a big 'if.'

I mean, I can't imagine this guy (and his agent) leading such a ball-busting negotiation, if he wasn't capable of playing. I mean, that would be a dick-move of the highest order.

Yep. Manning's going to wind up in Minnesota, you watch.

Actually, a couple of the analysts on NFL Network said that he will most likely go to either the New York Jets or the San Francisco 49ers. That's just a crap shoot of a guess, but I think the Jets thing would be totally plausible.

Can you just imagine? Two Mannings in New York? THE BIG APPLE AIN'T BIG ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF THEM!!! lol

This is a whole other story if your talking any other body part but your talking the NECK. How many procedures/surgeries now? Hell, he rarely got touched as it is-can you imagine him on a team with a sub-par line getting battered?

Anyone whose job title starts with 'anal,' I dismiss out of hand.

Besides, it's a bit ludicrous; Ryan doesn't want anyone on that team who could challenge him publicly and SF practically made the Super Bowl with the QB they have now.

I'm looking at teams that have several pieces already in place; receivers, OLine, stud RB and a similar offensive scheme, and desperately need a top-flight QB.

And I keep coming back to Minny.

Four of the game's biggest QBs in the same division? The NFC North would be hell-on-wheels, should that happen.

Word is Manning has been cleared to play. Let the bidding war begin!

Although teams are going to have to be cautious with him. At this point he's one good hit away from being a vegetable. The team he goes to better hvae a good line.
