Packers elevate Tom Clements into offensive coordinator role

QB coach will replace Joe Philbin Brad Biggs

Maybe the only surprise about Tom Clements’ promotion with the Green Bay Packers is that it took so long.

But head coach Mike McCarthy did what many expected he would in elevating Clements to offensive coordinator from quarterbacks coach, putting him into the position vacated by Joe Philbin, who left to become the coach of the Miami Dolphins.

McCarthy took care of business after the Packers’ staff returned from coaching the NFC squad in the Pro Bowl. Clements has been an offensive coordinator before, serving in that role for two seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He’s been longing to become a coordinator again, and now he gets the chance without having to move. The Packers denied a bid by the Chicago Bears to interview him for their coordinator job two years ago.

"Tom has been an integral part of our success and our staff, making it an obvious decision to promote him to offensive coordinator," McCarthy said in a statement released by the team. "He has earned this opportunity and we look forward to continued offensive success in 2012."

Clements interviewed for the head-coaching vacancies at Tampa Bay and in the college ranks with Penn State. He’s got a solid reputation and is credited for helping develop Aaron Rodgers after the departure of Brett Favre. In that vein, he is also credited with working with Packers backup Matt Flynn, who should be a targeted free agent.

"I'm happy that it's happened and I'm happy for Joe that he's a head coach, and I'm glad I was able to step into his place," Clements said in the team’s release. "I've been a coordinator before, only for a few years. I've always wanted to get back to doing that and I'm thankful that it's here in Green Bay."

McCarthy will remain the play caller for the Packers.

Now here's a situation where the HC, not the OC, calls the plays so what Tice is doing as OC isn't odd at all.

If the Packers can have an OC who doesn't call plays why are the Bears having such a hard time finding a QB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator who won't call plays either. The fact that we were interested in Tom Clement proves that our intentions were good before Martz got hired.

I'm still in the dark about why so many have turned the job down but there must be some reason why since so many have done it and we've been denied access to others. I'm curious as to how the Pack managed to deny permission when the Bears job was a clear promotion over his job as a QB coach. I didn't think teams were allowed to do that.

I think teams have the right of first refusal if I remember correctly. I'm sure we had him pegged to go to OC all along anyway so I doubt there was any way he was going to go anywhere else when he can be the OC of the best offense in football. That would look pretty damn good on the resume.

My guess is people turned your job down because you have a lame duck head coach that can't get axed this season. Had Lovie been canned it probably wouldn't be as much of an issue.

That's probably part if it but the chances of it happening if they right the ship aren't all that great. The McCaskey's love him and even though Emery controls his destiny he'd still need to find one better than Lovie. There weren't any on the market this year who were any better.

With Clement it may be as much his not even wanting the gig as the Packers turning it down. Just because there's an offer doesn't mean it has to be accepted but all it tells me is that some people still see the situation in Chicago with that coaching staff as being fucked up.
