Since When Did Kurt Warner Get Put In Charge Of HOF Selection?....

One time grocery clerk and one time Super Bowl winning QB Kurt Warner is passing judgement on TWO time winning Super Bowl QB Eli Manning???? What an asshat. I heard he's back to stocking shelves again when he isn't giving out unsolicited opinions about other QB's. In fact he was Safeway's employee of the month in January. Got a raise to $9.68 and hour too.

Warner says Eli Manning isn't yet Canton-ready

Eli Manning joined elite company when he became only the fifth player in NFL history to win a second Super Bowl MVP award.

Joe Montana has three of them and Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Bart Starr and now Manning have two each. Brady is most certainly headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day but not so fast with Manning. Not so fast according to Kurt Warner, anyway.

Manning has one more Super Bowl title than his former teammate Warner, but the retired Warner isn’t certain Manning is cut out for Canton yet.

I fully disagree with that," Warner said on 620-AM in Phoenix on Tuesday. "You know, because I know we put a lot of weight on championships, and rightfully so. But championships are won as a team, and I’m fully convinced of that. You never see one guy -- a great player, great quarterback -- carry a team through the playoffs and into a Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl that way. I’ve never seen it.

“You know, even in that game (Super Bowl XLVI), it’s 21-17. That’s the game. There wasn’t a quarterback just up and down the field carrying the team. Yeah, he made the plays down the stretch -- no question about it. He’s had two great playoff runs -- or his team has had two great playoff runs. But I also look at the rest of his career.

“I mean, he has an 82 quarterback rating throughout his career. You know, he’s had five of his eight seasons where he has thrown 16 interceptions or more. His completion percentage on his career is 58 percent. To me, those aren’t Hall of Fame numbers, and by that, I mean every time you step on the field you’re a game changer, you’re a difference maker. And I don’t believe Eli Manning has been that guy until this year.

"Now, if he plays the same way he played this year, the rest of his career, and you give him five more years, and then add the two championships, then I think we have reason to debate, and he's probably going to be in the Hall of Fame in that position.”

You can listen to Warner right here, and he makes some valid points. Manning is coming off a terrific regular season and with a few more solid regular seasons, he will strengthen his resume. We don’t believe he needs to win two more championships to be Canton-worthy, but another wouldn’t hurt and certainly some more 4,000-yard seasons would help.

The problem with your rant is...

Kurt is right. A championship (or two) certainly CONTRIBUTES to HOF entry, but it is a far cry from the only criteria. Statistically, he's been a bit less than "great" most of his seasons, as well as overall. Don't think I'm discounting the two SB victories (and MVP's), but you know as well as I do that the HOF voters are going to look at the ENTIRE REALM of his career.

OVERALL.... he's not there yet. A couple more great years (regardless of championships), and he probably will be.

Besides... if the HOF was so focused on one aspect of a player, how do you explain Dents long ass wait to get in? He should have been in years ago.

I agree with you loki...I have to admit, my first knee jerk reaction, even before I started reading the article, was very similar to Soul's...I thought, here we go again, some bitter, ex-player dogging a current player unnecessarily or unjustly...but like you say, I think makes a good point and is right...two SB MVPs or not, he's not quite there yet...he might/probably will get there, but if he retired tomorrow, I am not sure he's done enough individually in the totality of his career to get in...

    Speaking of passing judgement...lol.

    1. It sounds like Warner's opinion was solicited.
    2. It's just that, an opinion.
    3. He offers good points about why Manning may not quite be in Canton yet.
    4. Warner has always been a class act and probably doesn't deserve to be blasted for giving his opinion on an active player, especially considering he's paid to do it.

I personally believe Manning is a borderline HoFer right now, but will eventually cement his status as one by the end of his career.

Not my rant.....................Brad Biggs wrote the article and I don't disagree with some of it. There are some valid points although I'd venture to guess if we surveyed that stats of every HOF QB we'd find quite a few who haven't done even this well. For instance, I'd guess that Sid Luckman's stats are little if any better.

My real point is why all of a sudden is Kurt Warner commenting on these current NFL QB's. A few weeks ago it was a critique about Martz and Cutler. I wonder who'll be next. Funny he has nothing to say about Tom Brady whose now lost the SB twice to Eli but there's no doubt Brady will be HOF material once he retires.

I'm not criticizing the conclusions we may draw from this only the fact that it's Warner seemingly making the judgement call here. That and the fact that I don't really care much for Kurt Warner. So call me prejudiced. I am, and I admit it.

Good points Wolf but does Brady get dinged because he's lost twice to Eli. One point I'll bring up that to me adds points for induction to Eli's side of the ledger is not only has he won two SB's, the same as Brady and one of only 5 in the history of the game to do it, but in both instances he beat a HOF shoe in Tom Brady, and in both instances he was named the SB MVP.

Stats aside for a moment at least Eli gets the "Top Gun Trophy" for going up against the best and beating the best. Maybe rather than questioning Eli's eligibility it's Brady's that should be under scrutiny. Eli's record is now 2-0 and Brady's is 2-2 with both those losses coming to Eli and the Giants. Thoughts to ponder.

    Just sayin'.

    2. It's just that, an opinion. (agreed, and opinions aren't wrong)
    3. He offers good points about why Manning may not quite be in Canton yet. (true, but maybe points should be made about why maybe Brady may no longer so deserving of a first ballot election. seems like it was pick on Eli day (just a figure of speech, not literally) )
    4. Warner has always been a class act and probably doesn't deserve to be blasted for giving his opinion on an active player, especially considering he's paid to do it. (I've never been a fan of Kurt Warner and maybe that has something to do with it but he's been making quite a few comments about other QB's of late. KW was pretty much a byproduct of Mike Martz in his hey day and not nearly as good as many believe he was. I guess I just don't have as high of an opinion as other do PB)

I personally believe Manning is a borderline HoFer right now, but will eventually cement his status as one by the end of his career.
I think you're right and maybe it's just that Warner talks about Eli possibly not having earned that distinction yet but does there ever come a time when someone who was considered a "shoe in" (Brady) loses that status because he was beaten twice by a QB who may be considered marginal for consideration?

I just think that train of though should run both directions and Warner is simply running it in one. JMHO is all.

I think the reason Brady is a shoe-in is because he has dominated his position for a full decade. He's probably at least in the Top-5 to Top-10 of most major passing records. He's been to 5 Super Bowls, winning 3 of them, been named SB MVP twice and league MVP twice. He's had a rough go at it in the last couple Super Bowls but I don't think that should diminsh what he has done over the last 10 years during the regular season and the playoffs. I can't stand him or the Patriots, but I'm jealous of what they've done and how that organization is run. (Minus the whole Spygate thing. lol)

Might that have something to do with the general idea that he just recently retired and is a paid analyst? Additionally, the hot topic anytime a SB ends tends to be the impact of the QB on the victory, even more so when he is the MVP. And probably, like you mentioned, even more than that when that QB beats someone often considered one of the best by many.

Warner, and I know some dislike him, has always been a class act, especially when it comes to talking shit about other players. Eli is merely the "flavor of the day" when it comes to NFL discussions. If GB had played in the SB, and Aaron was the MVP, the same topic of Rodger's "Canton worthy" status would be getting discussed. And like Eli, Rodgers (for as good as he is) would be in the same boat. He's had a couple of great years, a couple that were good... and he also would need a few more really good (or great) seasons before he should be considered a lock.

You mentioned Luckman. Remember, what we consider "great", as far as QB's go, has changed over time. There are a bunch of HOFers who would be "borderline", if selected at all, if the same yardstick that is used today was applied to them back when they were eligible.

Eli still has a lot of career in front of him. Can we label him a HOF candidate already? No...that title is reserved for the truly exceptional players that are playing....your Brady, Ray Lewis, Polamalu, Andre Johnson type of players. Those guys that are elite year in, and year out at their positions..they typically get labeled "HOFer" way before it actually happens.

Still...if Eli keeps on winning important games in the 4th quarter, and who knows...add another SB to his resume (god forbid)...then sure, he will be HOF ready, no question.
