Summary

Once again, the Green Bay Packers own the NFL draft.

Ted Thompson was on his game this weekend, nabbing great values and finding players who will attack the needs on this depth chart. Nick Perry is one of the steals of the draft at No. 28 overall. Same for Jerel Worthy and Casey Hayward in the second round.
Day 3 filled the roster out with good depth players who have nice special teams potential.
Notable is Andrew Datko. A preseason 2011 first-rounder, Datko has missed major time with injury but has great upside.

Will we ever out do the Packers? Damn....

Free agency: GM Ted Thompson doesn't really do free agency. Like, at all. But he ventured off path a little this year, signing veteran Jeff Saturday to replace the departed Scott Wells at center. He also acquired Anthony Hargrove to bulk up the front three, but Hargrove has been suspended for the first eight games of the season for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal.

Draft: Thompson and staff wasted no time fixing a defense that allowed the most yards in the NFL last season. CB Casey Hayward, taken 62nd overall, might be the most interesting pick, as Charles Woodson is getting older and Tramon Williams is getting cruddier.

Holes to fill: On the subject of the secondary, Nick Collins will certainly be missed. The Packers released the veteran safety due to lingering concerns about last September's season-ending neck injury, and his absence leaves a huge void in the defense. After Collins' injury last season, safeties Charlie Peprah and Morgan Burnett really struggled (though Morgan's still young with room for improvement). That's one of the reasons Thompson selected Jerron McMillian out of Maine 133rd overall. Avoiding the running back position in both free agency and the draft was curious, as an effective ground game would take pressure off Aaron Rodgers, forcing opposing defensive lines to blink before just taking off to go pummel the All-Pro quarterback. Lastly, with Chad Clifton gone, can Derek Sherrod hold the fort at tackle?

I wish Ted Thompson was our general manager.

I don't know that I would go so far as to give our draft an A+, but I definitely like the fact that TT didn't just sit back and do nothing about our horrid defense. Hopefully most of the guys will pan out and provide some much needed starter talent so a few players don't have to try to do everything anymore. We need to force teams to key on more than just CM3. We had the most explosive offense in the NFL last season, so even if our defense improves just a little that will go a long way towards helping us get to the Super Bowl this season.

I wouldn't be so quick to drool over this Packers draft. The Pack were also given A's by so many after their 2011 draft. But by the end of last season, only Randall Cobb made any noticeable contributions. And Derek Sherrod, who many had the Bears taking as a T, was terrible before his season ending injury. May look good on paper, but let's see how it looks on the field. Besides, the Bears have seriously closed the gap with this offseason.

You do realize that on a team as loaded as the Packers were in depth that it would be very hard for a rookie to make an immediate impact.........right? Especially when 6 out of the 10 picks were offense?

Typically I only look at a teams picks from 1-4. The guys from the 5th rd and beyond don't tend to be guys that stick around or become big impact players.

So Sherrod couldn't win a starting spot and entered the lineup due to injury. Cobbs' major contributions came on special teams. Alex Green had 3 carries and couldn't take away much playing time from the mediocre Starks and Grant. And Davon House couldn't crack the lineup in an awful secondary. And their 6 picks from Rds 5-7 did nothing for the team. Remind me again why the Packers were given an A by most for their 2011 draft?

Well if that's the case, you must regularly hate the Bears draft classes. :smile:

Sherrod wasn't drafted to be the starter. We had Clifton so he had time to sit back and learn. He was thrown in the fire and wasn't ready, he needs to bulk up like Bulaga did after his rookie season.

Cobb did more than just special teams, he also made some very nice catches and saw quite a bit of snaps during the season.

Alex Green had 3 carries on a team that barely runs......surprise?

House couldn't crack the lineup that featured Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams and Sam Shields who all were coming off of good seasons before last seasons debacle. Our issue was primarily pass rush, not coverage.

Draft grades are worthless anyway, you can't judge a draft class until 4-5 seasons down the road.
