Kyle Orton: I'm not just a backup with Dallas Cowboys
Kyle Orton raised eyebrows this spring when he chose to sign with the Dallas Cowboys as a backup rather than compete for a starting role elsewhere. Orton didn't visit any other teams, instead taking the Cowboys' generous three-year, $10.5 million deal to get behind Tony Romo on the depth chart. Does the 29-year-old Orton still believe he could compete as a starter in the league? "I hope so," Orton said, according to the Cowboys' official site. "I feel like I've played good ball in this league, I feel I've got a lot of good ball left in me. I don't see this as committing myself to be the backup. I'm just committing myself to be a part of the team."
Orton's wording there is interesting. Romo is completely entrenched at QB for Dallas and is coming off the best statistical season of his eight-year career. Orton's competitive drive appears intact, even if the decision could lead you to think otherwise. "He's certainly someone who is capable of playing and being a starter in this league, but this is a good place for a quarterback to play," head coach Jason Garrett said. "Our quarterbacks have played well here -- he certainly understands that. He's a team guy." Garrett called Orton's signing "a really good acquisition for us" and we certainly can't disagree with that. We just ranked Orton as the No. 1 backup quarterback in the NFL, after all. But it remains curious why Orton chose Dallas. He might not be committed to a backup role, but the Cowboys are clearly committed to Romo. Barring an injury, Orton seems to have traded the spotlight for security.

I think last year KC proved he can win in the NFL...with the right team. he needs an OL, RB, and a few big targets.
I also think they are going to regret keeping Cassle over him.
But much like Campbell, he chances are pretty much done. Enjoy your backup career Kyle.

He got a lot of money to be a backup. Very smart move on his end to take that money.

Yep, and I think there is probably a back door deal there that if there is an injury during the year that Dallas will look to trade him to that team if they show interest.

Kyle can win some games but he'll never win big. He's not a guy who could take a team to the SB but he is one of the best backups to have. For out purposes Campbell's size, mobility and his arm were probably a better fit but if KC hadn't taken him on waivers last year he might well have ended up in Chicago and still be here.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Eh if Dilfer and his like can get to a SB KO could. But it would take a team that was near complete and fit his skill set with short to medium passes that set up big bombs and a strong running game to keep D's off his WR's. If KC didn't want him though no team should. Big WR's and TE's, a really good run game, and solid D would have been more then enough to win that Div w/Orton.
He'll do fine in Dallas too though, if that OL holds up b/c that dude is like bledsoe, he's a f'n statue; and something big D fans forget is how good their qb makes that shitty OL look w/his mobility.

That sounds just like Romo. Maybe Kyle has a shot at starting for the pokes afterall?
