No one cared last year because PI is rarely called on Hail Mary's, even with the normal refs.

People with short memories have been lead to believe that every bad/missed call is a call that the regular refs would have done differently. Yes, these rookie refs make more mistakes than the regular refs, but this call.... may have happened with the regular refs.

    A) The rule on possession, doesnt state more posession. It just states Simultaneous possession goes to the offense. Its a grey area.
    B) PI is rarely called on Hail Mary's by regular refs.
    C) Look at how many shady calls went GB's way, against NYG in the playoffs.

Even though these guys have more bad/missed calls, at least they are bad calls on both sides.

Oh, also, who had both hands on the ball with both feet hitting the ground first? I'll give ya a hint, he wasn't a GB packer...

And the worst part, by my count this is at LEAST the 3rd game turned on the bad calls of the replacement refs.

Tate caught the ball. Tate's left hand was holding the ball throughout the reception process. Hit right hand came off momentarily, but that doesn't mean he didn't continue to share possession and control with Jennings. If Jennings could have, he would have ripped and rolled away from Tate, but he couldn't -- Tate's hand was not only firmly grasping the ball, but it was between the ball and Jennings' chest. Throughout the entire catch process. The ref who signaled "TD" was in the best position to see that part of the dual catch. At no time did Jennings have "sole possession."

It's worth noting that the simultaneous possession rule make no mention of the ball's proximity to a player's chest, or how many hands constitutes possession or control, or what percentage of control the receiver must have in order for it to be considered joint control. It does say that if one player gains possession of the ball, and the other player subsequently also gains possession, then it is not to be considered simultaneous possession. I read somewhere that the difference between when Jennings and Tate gained possession of the ball was .05 seconds. Perhaps that is descernable without slo-mo, perhaps not, but it was the referee's judgement that it was simultaneous.

IMO, the noise and stink raised by the national media has more to do with the script (Green Bay beating the supposedly inferior Seahawks) being wrecked, and people complaining about replacement officials & wanting the regulars back, and everybody wanting a piece of the spotlight, than with the play itself. The play was just a convenient trigger for feigned outrage.

The only truly controversial part of the final play was the OPI that was not called. That should have ended the game in Green Bay's favor. It was just missed. But as others have pointed out, the game would have gone far differently if Green Bay had not also been the beneficiary of bad calls and non-calls.
