Being Irish myself, I have no issue with the ND Fighting Irish. Now if they used a derogatory term for Irish people, then that is a different story. Calling Indians redskins is fairly offensive. BUT not as offensive as the Cleveland Indians mascot. That is just racist to a new level

Youre half right, yes the names were chosen because of the fighting prowess, etc. However, "Redskins" is about as offensive a term as you can get.

Compare that with "Fighting Illini" which was chosen for similar reasons (plus being the namesake of the state), but this describes an ACTUAL tribe, not a derogatory term for Native Americans in general. Similar, but completely different.

There is nothing wrong with being PC when it comes to terms used that are offensive to certain groups, which "Redskin" definitely is.

And when the Indians, as a nation, not some subgroup of 7 people, actually get pissed about it I'll believe you. But when the nation doesn't give a shit, then I see no reason for me too.

They probably have lodged complaints, but the name change will never take place as long as the owner wants to keep the name as is.

The fighting Illini were forced to get rid of their Indian mascot because an Indian tribe found it offensive.

The difference between the two, the U of I is a public institute while the Redskins are privately owned.

The Sup court is deciding if they will hear the case this year. If they hear it they will get to decide if the 'Skins will be able to keep their trademark. you can find it online.

7 Indians have voiced displure for an entire nation, and not one(that I could find) tribe has stated an issue, I only found the 1 article though, the wiki history of the derogetory names for sports teams, didn't mention any tribes making a complaint about the 'skins either.
